I've been reading this board a while and noticed I haven't seen any talk about Sony's new higher end models... They are listed on the website as:

Sony MDR-CD3000 (MSRP: $699.99)

Sony MDR-CD2000 (MSRP: $349.99)

Sony MDR-F1 (Which I can't find on their website today for some reason)

How do these compare to the regular audiophile lineup?

Just curious.

If you run a search, you'll find a large amount of information on the CD-3000. It was talked about a lot a while back (before the etymotic and then the AT frenzy). From what was said, it's a high end can, and can compete with the likes of the Senn 600. At those quality levels, personal tastes start to play a larger role. I think that it typically retails new in the states for $400.

I don't think that the CD-2000, has really come up in conversation that much. I think the F1 is supposed to be comfortable, but has questionable sonic properties (just going off the top of my head here; I don't think that much has been said about them). I don't know if they are still being produced.

Yeah, try out the search function. It'll bring you a lot of the information that you're looking for.

some of this is hearsay:

sony high end:

r10: total eargasm
cd3000: bright, detailed, open
cd2000: too bright
cd1700: warm, closed, amazing midrange
f1: ultimate in comfort, good mids & highs, light on bass

i believe these are all the super high end sony cans. obviously this is just a quick roundup.

CD3000 is actually closed and when I auditioned them they were not bright. To my ears typical biocellulose sound. Warm, liquid, very detailed midrange and smooth bass and treble. Haven't heard the 2000s.

I got a pair after several months of "research". I do love them. Along with the R10, I think the 3k are by far Sony's best products

i can only go by what is written here about the cd3k, but it has been pointed out they are vented or semi-closed cans. can anyone verify this?

They are closed. Put sound on. Hold the earpieces together. You will hear NOTHING. A vented design would allow at least some sound leakage.

nope, it looks closed but it's actually open believe it or not. Or basically it acts like an open headphone. It's vented all the way around the earcup and so there is no pressure against the back of the transducer, effectively making them open cans.

Osaire, check out the featured reviews section for some good Sony CD3000 reviews.

I have tried the Sony F1. They are the ultimate cans when it comes to comfort. But it's also that design which leaves you with no bass to speak of. I mean, of course there are low freq. tones, but there's no punch to your ears at all.

Also, I found the mid and high range of it inferior to HD590/600.

Which amps did you audition them with?

I used the cd3k and the cd1.7k with my current set up (melos). The CD3k is good, but not my style, and the cd1.7k is just too colored and not too detailed. I would recommend the cd3k over grados.

However, the cd280 and cd2000 and whatever the heck else in the series is pretty sub-par.

Note to hirsch: I am not dissing the cd3k in any way shape or form. But the rest of the cd series can burn!

The CD3K and the Melos are not a happy couple in my rig. No midrange depth to speak of. Different story with ZOTL, which really brings out the best in the Sony cans. OTOH, the Grado SR-200 may be almost as good as the HD-600 with the SHA-1, but loses something going back to the ZOTL. The HD-600 will shine with either amp.
