I pointed a video camera at the Realiser's tiny display so I can watch it on the TV while using the remote control.

Here are some photos of my latest solution. The camera is a Carson DR-300 ezRead. I attached a washer to the top of the Realiser which slides into the slot on the camera's battery cover and holds the camera in place. I covered the camera's light with gaffer tape to prevent reflections on the Realiser's display.

Update: I replaced the taped washer with a tongue depressor to hold it more securely.

Measurements:
A8 display 44x16mm
A16 display 75x50mm (estimated)
DR-300 view 47x35mm (newer model)
DR-200 view 56x42mm (older model)
Camera view can be increased by moving it farther away.

Initially I had the same problem to read the tiny A8 display from my seating position, so a quick and dirty solution was to use an iPad and it‘s camera as a magnifying glass:

Then I ordered a 20 USD IP camera module on ebay and pointed this to the A8:

On a web browser, it looked like this:

Later on, I made a small wood housing with some spacers to keep the camera in the right position:

and feeded the camera IP stream to my Pronto TSU9600. This allows to have the A8 display seen on the remote

I noticed that the first users of the Realiser A8 used to make 7.0 PRIRs using a stereo pair of loudspeakers.
Why 7.0 and not 7.1? As far as I know, A8 offers to make center and SW channels automatically. Why would anybody refuse SW channel? What happens when he listens to 7.1 audio?

Instead of measuring a real subwoofer, you can configure the Realiser's Tactile menu to mix the SW input directly into the headphones output, which might even sound better than a real subwoofer.

I see ... Thank you.
Does that menu setting override the SW channel within the 7.1 PRIR (preset)?
You can choose whether or not to mute the virtual SW (if one was created in the PRIR) independently of the Tactile menu.

So there are various possible combinations such as:
Virtual SW muted, Tactile 0.0xSW
Virtual SW muted, Tactile 1.0xSW
Virtual SW unmuted, Tactile 0.0xSW
Virtual SW unmuted, Tactile 1.0xSW

Hey :)

I know this thread has been dead for a couple of years but I was wondering if someone had an archive of the dropbox folder?
I just bought an A8 and I won't have access to a measurement room until maybe January. In the meantime, if I could get access to this folder of PRIR it would be amazing :L3000:

Best,
Florian

Hey, since the thread is kinda resurrected, i have two questions for old Smyth Realiser owners :
  1. What are your favorites PRIRs from the dropbox folder and for what usage ?
  2. Do you know any DAC/Amp that happens to actually enhance the wow effect of the Realiser ? Don't you find it hard to have same or better experience with an external DAC/AMP ?
  3. What is your favorite headphone so far and why ?
I own a realiser since a few years, here are my answers so far :
  1. I really like Jan Montana v4.0 for its huge room effect, the clear separation of all 8 channels and the sound coloration which suits well with movies and music but lacks a bit of precision. I tried almost all of them a few years back, but i don't remember the others i liked and now that i have better headphones i'd like to retry some of them
  2. My Audio-GD R28 is definitely less fun to listen to than the Realiser itself (the Realiser has more bass punch -maybe artificial- and better details). The R28 makes everything sound kinda liquid, analog and musical but i feel the R2R DAC is not suited for the best precision and maybe a Sabre chip would be better ?
  3. So far the best headphone i have tried with it is the Sennheiser HD800S for its huge sense of space, no bass leakage, and 0 distorsion. But the sennheiser is lacking some character or flavour, it sound too neutral lol. I want the same soundstage and precision but with a bit more flavour and fun (bass...). I liked the AKG Q701 a lot too for the soundstage. I also have a Focal Clear but i didn't tried it with it yet. I am wondering if any planar magnetic with the same soundstage and overall quality exists to try with the Realiser ?
Thanks for sharing your experience, i know the product is about to die, but i don't have any intent to stop using it soon and it seems a bit early to upgrade to the A16 for me. I'd like to keep it fresh by adding some variations to it !

Personally I was saved by the dropbox where I found a specific 9.1.6 PRIR from Rene. Thanks to all those very generous guys.
I use this BRIR exclusively for movies and DVD series with an upmix included at all times.
The headphone I have always used is the Philips Fidelio X2 which is for me a perfect combination of good value for your money especially after buying the Realiser…
Most of the BRIRs I have tried are usually not heard at ear level but rather close to the ceiling and even sometimes right above my head.
Still I persevere. If by any chance you wish to share a PRIR please do so. The more we can gather on the dropbox the more possibilities one will have to find a suitable BRIR.
It goes without saying that measuring is the best way to get there. But for some the possibility is not always available for whatever reason.

Thank you all !

edit : never had the A8 at the time because I found it too expensive and yet I fell for the A16 because I could never let the the opportunity pass me a 2nd time...
