If the output stage is done correctly, this may be close to the end-all (relatively) for computer-as-source?

Thanks elrod

That is what I figured... I guess someone could try installing the Zapfilter MkII output stage to get rid of that faux pas though eh?

I'm buying one of these simply because of the form factor and the AES outs. I don't even need the DAC or analog outs. I'm really glad they finally did this. I also thank my modder for dissuading me from getting an SB3 even though he mods them all the time.

You'll still be doing a comparision on the DAC, though, right?

Sure. I'm going to pick up at least 2 of these. I'll try one out on the headphones.

I think it is a positive step that a company has seen fit to release a product like this. But for me, the price is a total dealbreaker. For that money, I could build an entire computer (with much more flexibility and higher useability) and connect it to a high quality DAC.

Surely just buying a Squeezebox 3 or something similar and connecting it to a $1000 DAC (eg Lavry, Benchmark, AQVox etc) would sound just as good and cost at least $700 less. Or am I missing something ?
