Slim Devices Transporter!/New $2000 Slimbox
Jul 24, 2006 at 11:05 PM Post #2 of 148
Lots of detail on the Slimdevices site. Bold claim: sound quality that surpasses even the most exotic compact disc players. They're offering a free Squeezebox to those who preorder.

I'm a little sorry to read that the remote is still button-based with no knob, trackpad or other analog-ish controls. *sigh* That's the product announcement I really want, a Sonos-like controller for my Squeezeboxes.

Ahh.. considering how good the Squeezebox's analog out sounds (even as an afterthought), I'm really really interested in how this is.

I guess it's basically a DAC with an ethernet option. Damn it's beautiful..

Comes with a free Squeezebox too, eh.

At $2,000 I would not call it free. Having said that it is a beautiful machine, which I would not know how to use it in the first place!

They should skip the free Squeezebox and knock off some $$ from the $2,000 price IMHO.

Now one could compare the same music file via foobar/flac->some kind of spdif out->Transporter vs. slimserver/flac->wireless(or ethernet)->Transporter.

It would have been nice if it had a nice USB input as well, though.

Well, basically, it'd be $1700 USD. That's alright, I guess.. so you're paying $1400 for the DAC itself, which isn't too bad - puts it into Stello territory?

Oh my GOD! 75ohm S/PDIF sockets, AES3/EBU interface, and even a word sync ability. This looks like it may be done right and not done strictly to conform. All my posts about jitter and how it can be avoided... I think this may be the option

It even uses a nice dac chip the AKM AK4396... the biggest thing that can easily ruin though is the output stages.. we shall see.

I for one find this very interesting....I'm wondering what jefemeister will have to say about this.
