It is pretty difficult to distort unless it is insane bass. Make sure that you haven't gone above 0db when doing digital EQ.

I just tried the mod to my PRO550s, opened 2 holes. There was a slight bass increase but I felt an overall loss in quality : / everything got kinda.. airy and a little more noisy.

ok so i couldnt stop thinking about this mod, so i tried.
as scared as i was, coz ive never opened up a pair of headphones before, i tried it.
and can i just say wow!! the bass is so much better now!! and also i think i stretched the pads a bit trying to get them back on, and maybe its just in my head but they feel more comfortable now too.

Is it possible to do this to the ATH-M50's? I haven't opened mine up and would like to know what to expect if I open them up later to try any simple modding

I used to have a pair of M50s. I think you would have to drill extra holes since there are no holes covered up.

I would think that the process of doing this mod on the 580 is identical to doing it on the 780 or the 900 pro.
 
It would take a lot of math and physics to calculate how much this mod increases the bass, but as many have reported, there's a noticeable difference. 
If you're not afraid of voiding your warranty, try the mod and report back.  It's reversible.

damnit, i snapped off the copper and red colored wires while trying to rewrap the pads.. they were a b**** to put back on man. you guys think i can still solder them back on?

pics? What pads are there to re-wrap?  The earpads just snap back in place...
It should be easy enough to solder them back on, just be quick (minimize heat transferred to the drivers) or you might damage the drivers.

Just found this thread and I'm very excited. When I received my 780's it sounded like there was a piece that was loose and rattling throughout the left can. Not sure how that affects the sound but to me, the bass is entirely lacking. When I play music through these vs. my desk speakers or my (recently acquired) V-Moda M 80s, it sounds as if there is nearly zero bass at all. Definitely "punchy" but people describe is as "powerfully punchy" and "strong" and to me, it sounds exactly what my desk speakers sound like when the bass is disconnected. Even when I turn up the EQ it just sounds distorted at best and still entirely lacking. Could the loose piece (that seems to no longer be loose as it no longer rattles around) have affected the bass? I am looking forward to modding my 780's as soon as my friend (whom I lent them to) returns them to me next week and will report back as to whether or not it helps.

Have you tried opening up them yet? Just follow the pics and should be pretty easy. What you describe is not "normal" - lack of bass (on this cans) and the ratlling.
