Sigur Ros is pure genius, and I need more like it:

I believe that is the beauty of Sigur Ros. It is entirely subjective. I personally love most of their CD but I'm mostly into "()". It is uncategorizable much like Redshifter said, "sigor ros is the ice that clings to winter eve's barren black branches." It is beautifull.

I could careless if Sigur Ros never makes it into the "Pollstar Top 50". Look at the list. http://www.pollstar.com/news/top50.pl
though I'm sure there are some good bands there I dislike many of them. That list is no place for Sigur Ros. Many people don't get it, nonsensical lyrics, actual interpretation is unheard of to some. Added to vocals by a gay lead singer in falseto is enough to scare many away. Stop trying to compare them to other groups and enjoy the music.

ENCOMPASS.
Go look it up in a dictionary, and then relax a little.

LOL, back atcha.

That's fine, but it's stil subjective, for me it doesn't "evoke" or "encompass" either band, no big deal, just another opinion, which were solicited earlier in the thread.

As for SR's talents, they very well could be going down the same path as the above two groups. I think they write brilliant music; more importantly, they are consistent and seem to have a very bright future ahead of them.
My opinion, deal with it.

Kwitel, I have no beef with that opinion whatsoever. I was just making small talk.

Yeah, it is kind of subjective. I think they sound pretty good too with some nice dynamics. Definitely quite a ways above your average squashed pop recording to my ears. Pretty good image too. I think Stereophile even named the last one recording of the month. But sure, they could be better.

Most people around here have already hear them, but another touchstone would be the last two Talk Talk albums. Some of that same tension and release, but a little more jazz than the classical sound that Sigur Ros leans to. Both ethereal though

The two volumes of Low Level Owl by Appleseed Cast is another one. In fact, the first thing that led me to Low Level Owl was a preliminary press release that mentioned GYBE and Sigur Ros, among others. Different, but similar in some ways.

No worries brother...didnt mean to sound so defensive; sometimes its difficult to read into the "tone" of a response. I was merely trying to defend the poster who wrote that comment (and back-up my perspective as well).
Regardless, your right, it is is subjective, and I respect ur opinion.

The first time I heard Sigur Ros was some time ago on the Vanilla Sky soundtrack a few years ago. I thought the song 'Svefn-G-Engflar' was really cool. It fit perfectly into the film's motif. I only recently picked up one of their albums 'Von' and like it. I am going to look into the band 'Godspeed' that someone here mentioned as well.

Has anyone here seen them live? I think someone mentioned that they did. What was that like?

Truly one of the most sublime performances I've seen (next to Sigur Ros
orphsmile.gif
)... honestly, though, they create an intense live atmosphere, augmented by anarchist & socialist words/images (reminding me of Crass) thrown in the background. And also, they are loud! Almost as loud as seeing Mogwai live, but not quite.

Man I'd give my right ball to see Godspeed play live! And If I'd been to a sperm bank before hand I might even consider giving up both!!!

Mind you if I'm throwing away my balls I'd want another couple of albums from them too!!!

Godspeed are something else....

Godspeed have been on hiatus for a very long time now-it's been about 4 years since their last album. I hope that they will continue to produce such great albums and not get carried away with their side-projects. 'all good things come to those who wait', I can only hope.

squall2072: heard any live Godspeed yet?

http://www.archive.org/audio/etreeli...llection=etree

However the general sound quality of these bootlegs is not even close to their studio work (not suprising)

Not to make people angry talking about radiohead, but when I initially was turned on to sigur ros, I read somewhere that it was from listening to or touring with sr (not quite sure which one) that inspired them to be more experimental with their stuff on kid a. Personally, I really enjoy sr for really relaxing music, and praise them for their willingness to be experimental in a very good way...

I just got the Limited Edition copy of Takk today (and The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place

) and either there is a mistake on Amazon.uk's description or caimanusa have purposely sold the cd without the suposed 16 page booklet. On the Amazon description it states that there is a 16 page booklet specific to the Limited Edition.

Those of you have the this cd and booklet please reply

i would say...

mogwai - happy songs for happy people
godspeed you black emperor - lift your skinny fists like antennas to heaven
sigur ros - ( )

if you're ok with more electronic stuff...

telefon tel aviv - farenheit fair enough / map of what is effortless
the one AM radio - the hum of electric air

good choice in music and good luck.

I know, I was hoping for an ablum this year because they seem to like there 3-5 year gaps and it's been a while. But alas I'm not Emperor of the Universe so I have little impact!

I've listened to some of the live recordings, even though the quality of the recording isn't great you can tell it would be brilliant there....

COME BACK GODSPEED!!! And make sure the old gang (lift your skinny fists) is with you! And be sure to tour the UK!! Please...

Godspeed you Black Emperor, I find, is a good match for Sigur Ros.

I categorize them under the "Icelandic Pop" category - I mean, this is their kind of music! For that reason, just listen to Bjork - and you will be bound to see some similarities here and there. I find genre evidence not to be as expectedly great, but there is certainly a lot of stylistic similarities. To pick apart music like Bjork and Sigur Ros, you should look at the individual trees, not the forest.

Ok wow. As a post-rock junkie, I find anyone comparing Sigur Ros to GY!BE almost blasphemous. To say you would like one if you like the other is just nonsense.

Sigur Ros is all swirling effects-driven guitar and synth driven, with a tendency to stay on the "prettier" side of things. Jonsi's voice lends itself to this style perfectly, and their music is genius.

GY!BE (as well as side projects ASMZ, TSMR, SFTF, ASMZMOATLLB, etc) are post-apocylaptic soundscape creators. Anyone who could find comparisons between () and F#A#(infinity) arent listening to the same albums I am (unless you count "music" as a similarity). Sigur Ros is beautiful in creation, GY!BE is beauty in destruction. They couldn't be any different.

The being said, I personally adore both bands. However, I cant say that the two go hand in hand. In most of my friends, they are mutually exclusive. Everyone loves Sigur Ros, but arent really patient enough for Godspeed.

That being said, anyone reading this who doesn't own Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven really ought to reconsider their entire life, and ask themselves "what the heII am I listening to?"

oh yeah, and all of this is IMHO
