Sigur Ros is pure genius, and I need more like it:

They have couple of excellent recordings and demonstarte creative potential and style, but the SQ of their recordings is sub-optimal, and their live performance is generally inferior to what the be(a)st live bands in the world today deliver.

I'll check them out again in May in Boston.

Why are you annoyed? People are entitled to their opinions and thoughts concerning how a group's music impacts them. If someone feels that Sigur Ros evokes thoughts of the music of Floyd, Radiohead or even Britney Spears then whatever. Interpretation of SRos's music is entirely subjective to the individual listener. No one specifically drew comparisons either so relax. And for what it's worth, Masonjar was extremely fair in his evaluation by stating that SRos music:

Quote:

For me they kind of encompass what I like about Pink Floyd, Radiohead and Slowdive. Yet, they are not copies of any one of them.

Note: "Yet, they are not copies of any one of them".

Wow and here I thought the recording quality if Ágætis Byrjun was fantastic. It might not be the best in the world, but.. "sub-optimal" ?? Compared to what? I was completely blown away by the sound quality when I first listened to it.

Man, the only reason I compared them to Pink Floyd and Radiohead is that I thought that Sigur Ros was influenced by them. I by no means said they were better, but even if I did it wouldn't mean anything because it would be apples to oranges. And as far as being "miles away" ? well maybe, but they're catching up fast.

Jar, as I said I'm a big SR fan myself and I'm paying big bucks for the front rows of their concerts. I beileve if they are persistent and creative enough they have potential, but so far they can't even make it to the Pollstar Top 50.

About SQ of their records I guess I'm biased, but all their recordings have clipping here and there, dynamics suffers and soundstage is narrow. I realize how challenging is to mix such a polyphonic sound, but it could be done better. Takk is a step forward, but I'd rather hand studio tapes to a classical music mixing engineer to open the soundstage and bring some air.

All this could be considered a personal preference indeed...but hey, just check Kid A

Seconded. Beautiful album. Actually recorded at Sigur Ros' custom studio in Iceland. And yes, Jonsi from Sigur Ros sings on "Over The Pond".

They were picked by Sigur Ros to support their () tour and "Over The Pond" features Sigur Ros (at least three members). Fantastatic album.

Hey Mercedes was a good band. It's a shame they broke up. I knew Mike, their 2nd guitarist, back when he was in the Cleveland band Sheilbound.

Definately get some Godspeed in your life! If it takes a few goes thats fine but when it clicks (usually East hastings on the F# A# Infinity album) Everything falls into place and its heaven.

Unfortunately it will corrupt you and personally I can't seem to listen to much else since I found Godspeed. Its not as melo as Sigor Ros but it can be just as moving!

After Godspeed (if you like it) there's "A Silver mt Zion" which is a group from Godspeed. Basically its a mini godspeed.

Their best album IMO is "Born into trouble as the sparks fly upwards"

Mogwai should be in your list too, "Happy songs for happy people" is a more laid back mogwai or there's their album "young team" with the belter "mowai fear satan"

After all that look up the post rock genre in amazon and take it from there...I'm currently on the same path!

I'm trying to think of the name of a band that my girlfriend played on her radioshow when she couldn't find Sigur Ros in our library.

I'm 80% sure she said The Kites, or maybe just Kites.

I just wanted to hear some other people's opinions on the group

I agree with Xakepa. I had two of SR's albums on CD (sold 'em zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...) and sound quality was sub-par-- brittle, digital and thin IMO. I also don't hear similarities to Radiohead or Floyd and agree SR has many many miles to tread before they can be mentioned in same breath with those two.

That said, I agree Cocteau Twins is a good recommendation if you like SR. Slowdive is another good recommendation, even if I think they are just OK as a band, but similar sound/style. Maybe Mogwai would be another possibility, even though I didn't like them either...

Agreed.
I think the recordings are fantastic, a real pleasure to listen to.
And...enough with everyone getting so sensitive about the comparison to PF and Radiohead. Jeez...here was the original quote: "For me they kind of encompass what I like about Pink Floyd, Radiohead and Slowdive."

ENCOMPASS.
Go look it up in a dictionary, and then relax a little.

As for SR's talents, they very well could be going down the same path as the above two groups. I think they write brilliant music; more importantly, they are consistent and seem to have a very bright future ahead of them.
My opinion, deal with it.
