Shure SRH1540 Review

The most remarkable thing about the 1540s is their durability. If you ignore the headband padding which does start to flake after a (long) time, they seem impervious to damage. I've also had mine for about 5 years and, headband aside, they could almost pass for a new set. This is with me just checking them in my bag with no protection for years on my commute too.
The HD280 ziplock headband pads work beautifully.

I keep mine in a fire safe or a Pelican 1400 watertight case, bright orange.

Finally got my Shure SRH1540 and I am writing this as I am listening to them...

First impression? Expectations exceeded and very impressed! 🎧
So far I have played many of my higher res music (24/96 FLAC tracks) through it ranging from Bill Evans to DEATH and TOOL and it all sounds excellent, even when just using a Focusrite Solo (3rd Gen) with its balanced output as the interface with my PC.

Looking forward to getting to know these headphones and happy to say I feel no need to invest in a second pair of anything for the time being 😁👌
What DAP are you using?

I cannot tell you how awesome the headphones are from balanced output of the Signature Sony DAPs.

:S Sorry but I have never been able to test the sound paired with the WM1A. I'm still rockin the WM1Z-SRH1540s (balanced) combo, It's the best thing ever.
I am rocking that combo now as well. Beautiful.

I’d like to find a suitable 4.4mm balanced cable for my Shure SRH1540 headphones. What are you guys (and gals) using? I’m in Newfoundland Canada and having problems finding anything, but then I’m not sure what I’m looking for. That is, I had been looking for a balanced cable specifically for the Shure SRH1X40 series, and I have a feeling I could more easily find a suitably spec’d generic cable. Please advise… and thanks!

Thanx for your response! Sooo…

Connector = MMCX …
Terminations = 4.4mm TRRRS …

… and I’m good?
You will literally choose SRH1540 connection in a drop down menu. Same with 4.4 connection. I will try to add a good picture of the actual cables when I get home.

Hey guys new to the forum.. I own the SRH1840 and have been considering the 1540. Need a closed back for general audio production duty and vocal tracking. I'm hesitant because the connections on the 1840 cuts out sometimes. Mainly in the left side. Support told me to try the extra cable and that did work for a little while but it's starting to cut out again - not as bad, but it's still cutting out. I will send these out for warranty but was wondering if anybody is having this issue? I also noticed some of you are using aftermarket cables?
I'm trying out the AKG K371, Shure SRH840, Beyerdynamic dt 700x Pro... the 840's frequency response suits me the most but I really hate the build quality. That's why I'm considering the 1540 but the cable connections worry me.

Thanks!

Shure have just released the 840a.Might be worth checking out as the build quality looks to be improved.

Looks like Shure has revamped the 840. If it was just the build that put you off them before, it looks much improved now.

@crewcut beat me to it!

I've had my 1540 for ~5 years and have had no trouble with the stock cable losing connection at the cups. @Quadfather uses these as his main set day in, day out. I don't think he's had any issues with his set either, although he does use an lqi aftermarket one.
