Or maybe there really are variants of E500s produced inherent in all manufacturing process. Whether the extreme units (ones that possibly leak more than intended by original designer) can be termed defective is debatable.`

They're leaking through the housing. Simple as that. You can practice sealing all day long if you want. Still going to leak.

Unless you spend all day in a library next to librarians I don't see the big deal with it. Sure some work in a quiet office. Is a little treble leaking from your e500 really the loudest thing there? Phones, computers, faxes, copiers, people, etc.
