I remember that unit packaged with the Men in Black movie.  It's a pretty good machine for the money.

IMO, the XA20es is 85% as good as the XA7es for a fraction of the cost.  It's a keeper IMO. I like that your cassette deck matches the XA20 in design.

Well, one can easily upgrade the op-amp from stock JRC to OPA627 for much improved performance but the 7ES is still better.  I am still holding to my 20ES as this particular model is my second expensive source purchase which dated back in 2003.

Oh, I plan on keeping it. Both were hand-me-downs from part of my dad's old system. They ain't going anywhere.

They are both from the same time period, so I'm not surprised they match so well.

There is a Sony TA-E90ES Audiophile Stereo Processor/Preamp   for $475  locally and it would help if you guys can advice if it's worth the price & also if it's good as an headphone amp.

I don't want to derail this thread but don't know where else to ask. You guys seem to be most knowlegeable with regards to Sony ES products.
Thanks in advance

my favorite headphone rig has the scd1 to a da924. if nothing else that thing could break my back. they don't build them like that anymore. in recent years i'd call es "mainstream" high end. not elite high end......but it was.

That's a great preamp for the money. Get it if it's cherry.

That's a good price for a E90ES.  Its purely a pre-amp (no tone controls) and works great with my HD800s.  If its in decent physical condition, I would buy it.

Thanks guys. I will get it.

If you don't like it, sell it to me as long as it's cherry. :D
