I saw your post about that earlier. Is he really that far out? Maybe it's just a parts issue? I'd try him again but don't bother him until I get my player back.
I'm hopeful that next week brings good news. By all accounts, I'm in for a treat. Just hope my tin ear doesn't get in the way!

He is that backed up, plus he is about to head back to school which compounds the matter. I am interested in hearing about your newly modded unit. Make sure that you post your impressions.

EDIT: Okay, I looked it up. The transport is top shelf. That's certainly worthy. What else?
Well everything is better. Replaceing parts here and there only does so much and has a limit to every unit. You can only do so much before redesigning the whole circuit. Do I know the ins and outs, no. What I can tell you is that most likely the scd-555es is maxed out and some say slightly superior to a xa777es or scd777es. Maxed out scd-1s and 777es's are compared to Linn cd-12's (not just on one or two sonic qualities either but all around
), for much less.
Best cdp I owned was a Linn Ikemi. People love the bass on the scd-1, the Ikemi was even better and it was definately better than the scd-1 or sacd moded 555es I owned in all other ways as well. Texture, tonality(was a bit more laid back than I would have liked...), and PRAT (which it is unchallenged in this area any where NEAR its price range...). Lots of options to consider.
The scd-1 or scd-777es however while not as good initially can be made to sound top tier after mods(and I mean TOP).
Like I said thats what I would have done, and Id figure Id justify myself as well. Either way you cant go wrong really.... But If I were to spend 2k and stop, it be a used cary 306, Ikemi, or emc-1 up. Im not that concerned with SACD.
k.s.
I'm just curious--how long should one expect to wait on Mathew's list by the estimates you recieved? Month, two months? I just got a buyer for my Meridian and am in negotiations for a 555es.
I didn't want to jump on the wagon, but with prices tanking on the older Meridians I figured it was the inteligent thing to do.

It took me approx. 2 week from the date of the shipment to get my C555ES back. You should call Mathew himself to see the waiting period.
Kshaft,
I can see your point and I think it is pretty much valid. However, given the price of the 777ES and SCD-1 modification packages, I think it is definitely too much for my young pocket.
Once the unit is properly burn in, I will stop by Tom Hankins's house and AB my unit agaist his Cary 306/200. Tom already said many times that my unit should sound almost as good as his Cary in Redbook and better in SACD.
Nightfall,
Thanks. I always a beliver in source first. I always wanted to get the modification after discovering how good is the C333ES but without a stable job....I can't. I'm glad that now...I can.
