Shanling M8 Android Portable player

Hi,

Stupid question but can this be used as a USB DAC connected to computer port AND charging while used as USB DAC ?

If so, how do I set it up ?

Regards.

EDIT 1 : I've tried, I could have the "USB DAC" page show up on laptop and having the device charging. Computer is running Win11. But I had no sound.

EDIT 2 : I've tried several settings and I think there are 2 options :
- 1°) it is not possible to use this as USB DAC and charge it at the same time.
- 2°) There is some incompatibility with my computer ports
- 3°) there is some incompatibility with Linux OS.
I can hook it up to Linux and it shows as USB DAC and I can get sound. But it does not charge :frowning2:

EDIT 3 : OK. Done further investigation. I tried to ook up my Fiio M11 Pro that I also owm. No problem with the Fiio. It is used as a USB DAC connected to my computer. And while used as USB DAC, it still charges. Will try to hook the Shanling up to my laptop with Windows 11 and see if if there it charges and plays as USB DAC.

EDIT 4 : OK. tried on Windows. As soon as the M8 is hooked up as USB DAC, it stops charging. So there are two possibilities :
- 1°) It is indeed not possible to do both : charge and use as USB DAC ;
- 2°) I am doing something terribly wrong...
BUT : it seems that when you disable the USB DAC funtion, it charges from USB port of computer. It dfoes not from the USB port of my desktop computer that is powered by Linux (Arch based distro).

Hi,

No one to answer that question ? In 4/5 days ? I did not expect such a silence... Maybe the problem I pointed was already known and discussed elsewhere ? I must confess that I did not perform any search on this thread :frowning2:
This was answered awhile back.

Answer is no, you cannot charge when the m8 is connected to a PC or laptop.

Not a huge deal as the battery drains very slow when connected to a PC / laptop.

Hi,

OK. So I am not doing anything wrong. Nice to know.
Do you know if that is a hardware limitation or is it a software limitation ?

Thanks a lot.

Hello -

Is anyone else experiencing stability issues after updating to the new firmware (V1.69)? Not that the M8 was particularly stable before, mind you. I cannot even get the Shanling music app to boot in Android mode anymore....

We are seeing no issues with stability. If you are unable to start even the Shanling Music app, please perform a factory reset of the device.

Hi guys,n

I know this is supposed to be a DAP and as such is supposed to be "mobile" and not really planned to be used at home.
But I am asking anyways : is there an accessory like a stand or a thing like that where I could sit the M8 at home, when I am not on the way and when I want to use this as a Digital Audio Streamer ?
Thanks a lot for your suggestions...

All stands I have seen are designed for smartphones or tablets and thus, the clamp is really not deep enough to get a firm grip on the DAP...

Look for Wooden stands, they normally have quite open the bottom ledge where the device sits.

For example we had some of these:

It's due to the XMOS chip used on the USB DAC input.

Due to USB-DAC mode charging limitations
I use charging M8 in bluetooth-DAC mode (bluetooth amp mode) using LDAC codec.
Windows 10, Alternative paid A2DP driver (force LDAC HQ 96 KHz)

Hi,

Thanks a lot for your answer.

So there is no way this can charge while being used as USB DAC and this a hardware limitation, so nothing that may change this.

There is something where you may be able to help me :

- If the M8 is connected to my laptop running Windows 11, behaviour is as follows : just hooked up with no USB DAC mode activated => charges ; USB DAC mode activated => does not charge ; disable USB DAC => charges again

- If the M8 is connected to my desktop running Linux (arch based distro) : just hooked up to computer => charges for 2/3 seconds and then stops charging ; USB DAC enabled => no charge...

If I could get the same on my desktop that what I have on the laptop, it would be good enough. Are there any settings anyone knows of either in Linux/arch or in computer BIOS to activate that ability to just charge, when USB DAC mode is not enabled ?

Thanks a lot for your help...

Sorry, we have no experience with running our devices on Linux, can't help with it.

Hi,

Thanks a lot for your answer. For some obscure reason, it is now working.

But I would have another question.

Do you know of an USB-C adapter that would allow the M8 (or any other Shanling device) to charge and at the same time allow output to an external DAC ?
I just ordered the Shanling H7 because I thought to connect the M8 into it with USB which should work (it work on a AUNE S6 DAC).
But I just got that if I do so, it will feed the Shanling H7 but will not charge.
So I hoped that I could use an adapter that would allow charging while still being able to use the external DAC with an app like UAPP or Neutron.
Something like this : https://www.amazon.fr/dp/B0C4919HRM/ref=twister_B0CBMJ4SSX?_encoding=UTF8&th=1
Should it work or is there no way to do it ?

Thanks a lot for your answer.

[EDIT 1] The linked adapter does not work with Shanling DAPs. But it seems to be working with the H7. A step forward  Still, the EH-3 may be a device better suited for my needs...

Upgraded FW from 1.22 to 1.69. So far everything works fine! Sounds now even better esp on the higher ends~~ This player just rocks even so many years!
Hi,

Yes it does...

Probably one of the best buys that I made lately (got one used).
Good sound. Reliable. Powerful output.

Only complaint : outdated Android version, but I can live with that

Regards.

I don't have this problem.

It seems this a problem realted to AirPlay (or the thing that is Apple's).
As I do not use it, I do not have this problem...

I know not a satisfactory answer, but that is the best I can give :frowning2:
Yeah, I'm just using the Shanling player...
