Shanling M8 Android Portable player

Hi,

Well, after several days of testing the M8, I must say that it is a HUGE disappointment.
For 2 reasons...

1°) As someone reported, I listen to it with a 4.4mm headphone. I stream .flac files in 24/44 or 24/96 with Wi-Fi.
After 45 minutes or so it is indeed boiling hot.
So far it has not shut down on me, but it it really really hot.
Feels like burning when you grab it and hold it in your hands.

2°) I really cannot believe that this has as much output power than Shanling advertises.
I listen to my music with a Sony MDR-Z1R headphone which is really not demanding.
I cannot get over 40/100 on the M6 Pro which is supposed to have about 600mW in balanced mode.
On the M8 which is supposed to have 800mW in 4.4mm balanced, I can easily push it up to 100% in High gain without having my ears bleeding.
I have to turn it to 80/100 in Turbo mode to have sound pressure beyond what is tolerable.

What I noticed is that if you use the Shanling in-house app and if you turn on EQ, you loose a lot of sound level.
This is really not something you can't hear. It is simply superbly obvious...
Can it be that as soon as you tweak the sound with EQ, whatever the app you use, it bypasses some circuitry and cuts power and gets hot because of some "processing" that has to be done ?

As a conclusion, I think I will go back to the M6 Pro (original).
I thought the M8 would be a huge step forward compared to the M6 Pro.
In my experience, it is not... It would even be the opposite...
Surprised. What about the sound quality tho, its what most of us love...

That's strange.
I am using Neutron player.
With turbo mode using 4.4mm balanced with my He1000v2, ~ 45/100 is pretty loud and those headphones crave power.
With my Xenns Top, ~22/100 is very loud.

You must like your music loud or perhaps someone is amiss with the m8 settings or hardware.

Hi,

Sound quality is stellar to me... at least after applying PEQ to my headphones.
If no EQ is done, my already "heavy on the bass" headphones sound really "boomy".
But with EQ, I get a level of detail, a level of spacialisation and a level of "enjoyment" that indeed surpasses the M6 Pro.

Same applies with M6 Pro by the way : EQ has to be performed.

But sound quality can be stellar if you do not have enough power to enjoy it, then there's no point in having it
But please read further :)

Hi,

Thanks for your answer. I really appreciate when people are trying to help in a way or another.

So what I did is that I performed a factory setting of the M8.
I then installed the Google Play Store.
And from the play store I installed Neutron.

Within Neutron, I left everything to default, except the fact I checked that the sampling rate should be equal to the one of the source.
If I don't do that it oversamples to 384khz...
I applied my headphone PEQ from the dedicated settings in Neutrron.
I edited the curve to apply something above -6.7dB pre-amplification and applied -0.67 instead :)
I don't think that is a lot of change as the guides all say "If that option is available, set preamp setting to..."

Now when I stream my music to the M8 from my Plex music server and remote control it with my phone, here's what I can report :
- connection seems stable as I just listend to about 3 hours of music with no interruption. That is good
- power is now "OK" : I can listen at usual level (and no it is not particularly loud) at 50/100 in "High gain" not Turbo.

Weird enough device is now on a stand and does not get as hot as it did before.
Can it be that it cranked down the volume to avoid overheating ?

Anyways, problems may be solved... and sound is GORGEOUS (of course the Sony MDR-Z1R is also part of the equation...).
I'll give the Oppo PM-1 a tru a little later and will also try the Dan Clark Aeon Flow Closed (more difficult to drive) to see how the thing performs :)

Are you in Turbo Mode?

Are you in Turbo Mode?
Nope. High gain.
In Turbo Mode I have "decent" sound level (but I stress on "decent" because I do not consider myself as listening to my headphones at unreasonable volume as some "younger people" does, with the result that, even with a closed headphone, everyon can listen to their music with them... Me, no one know what I am listening to with a closed headphone and only if they're really close with an open back headphone) when I reach 80/100.
So the scaling is not really made to "fine tune" the volume as you have only a few steps to adjust it. At least that is my impression before resetting everything back to factory settings.

1) M8 (and some of our other players) get warm by their design. They are using power demanding DACs, amplifiers and the shell is part of the cooling circuit. If you want player that stays colder, our M3 Ultra is more fitting, as it's running chipsets made for mobile devices.

2) Volume level settings differ between devices, so making any such simple comparisons doesn't really help with anything.

When you enable EQ, there is negative gain applied to provide enough room for the EQ adjustments.
We do not recommend using EQ if you want to achieve maximum sound quality and max power.

Hi,

Sure and this has been stated before.

And I perfectly understand that if you turn one at 70/100 and the other at 50/100, comparison may not be relevant.

BUT, when M6 Pro and M8 are both in HIGH GAIN what I can state is :
- I can turn volume up to 100/100 on the M8 and still be able to listen to it because the volume is really LOUD but it does not rip my ears off ;
- Playing the same track from the same source using the same app, I am totally unable to get over 60/100 on the M6 Pro because at that sound pressure, my ears start to bleed.

So, mind you, if I can push one to MAX volume and not the other, I really do believe that I am entitled to consider that the one I can push to the max produces LESS power than the one I can not push to that limit.
So please explain this and why you consider that this "does not help"... except sales of the devices of course :)

When you say both are in High Gain, do you mean the M8 is in High Gain or Turbo Gain?

If I remember correctly the M8 has Low Gain, High Gain and Turbo Gain. So High Gain is really 'Medium' and Turbo is really 'High'

High gain, medium gain, Turbo gain, they are different between devices. You can put them to Turbo gain and then compare. And make sure you don't have any EQ or DSP enabled, as they can limit volume. We recommend to do comparison with Shanling app and EQ and Replaygain off.

Hi guys,n

I know this is supposed to be a DAP and as such is supposed to be "mobile" and not really planned to be used at home.
But I am asking anyways : is there an accessory like a stand or a thing like that where I could sit the M8 at home, when I am not on the way and when I want to use this as a Digital Audio Streamer ?
Thanks a lot for your suggestions...

All stands I have seen are designed for smartphones or tablets and thus, the clamp is really not deep enough to get a firm grip on the DAP...

You could perhaps try that : https://hifi-passion.de/en/brands/fiio/1402/fiio-dk3s
