1 TB is a VAST amount of music, are you sure you need that much?
I have 23k+ tracks on 1tb card with only about 9gb of free space left. Yup, I need the 2tb cards to come out soon for most of my daps. The two A&K, Kaan and SP2k, can each hold 1.5tb at the moment but I haven't tried 2 1tb cards in the Kaan yet. It's tricky with the cards I have in there now.

I tried that once, I had entire discographies worth of music that I never listened to, and I found it easier to be very spare and specific on my card... Right now I have 500GB card and I only have 176GB free space left! See, it creeps up on me...I have to prune whats on the player now... I have over 20,000 albums in my collection, more than I could ever listen to, but if I want to listen, to say, Miles Davis, instead of carrying all his stuff, I would load 2 or 3 well researched samples, and work from there...makes it more approachable... but to each his own...

Yes, I am the same way, Miles has a huge catalog, but how many do I want to hear now, sometimes may want that 1950s-1964 style, sometimes the electric stuff from the late 60s 70s, and than maybe the more pop like releases after that.
It is much faster to find what I want if I load the card before I travel, kind of like an easy quick plan, without going to the trouble of making play lists.
On top of that I explore around 2-3 new albums (for me anyway) per week, and some of them, not many, unfortunately have staying power, leave some space for that.
Playing all tracks on a player random works better if you do not want to be skipping a lot of the tracks when they come up, and your like buzz hassle skip.
512 is plenty for the way I use these players.

If I had 20,000 albums I would certainly do things differently, like build a bigger house. As it Is I have around 2000.

I do the same thing, prioritize albums for closer listening and load onto 512 card, usually the newer stuff I acquire.
I have 2.7tb live lossless Grateful Dead/Garcia, and about 1tb the rest—jazz, blues, rock, folk, classic country, reggae. All in two, small portable external hard drives. No way I’ll ever be able to hear all that GD. It’s really an archival project

Are you one of those fans that went to Dead concerts with DAT recorders, mics, and stands?

One of my friends Joe used to go to Dead concerts with all that gear under his coat. He is a huge human, so you would not even know he was carrying to look at him. We would get to our place in the stadium and he would set up the two Mic stands so the Mics were slightly above the crowd and start recording on DAT tapes. I always wondered if he or anyone ever listened to the hours and hours of recordings he made.
Bet you could not even think about doing something like that today.

In the late 80s okay but now?

I saw the Jerry Garcia Band open for Frank Zappa in August of 1984 (I was there to see FZ, not the other guy!). During the JGB performance there was an entire area set up inf front of the stage for the recordists, of which there were many. They were all cleared out prior to Zappa playing-he absolutely refused to allow recording or photography at his shows.

A few years agoi I saw the Hendrix tribute tour, and immediately after the announcer said 'no photography allowed, there were literally 100s of cell phone camera flashes going off, a smaller number of which presisted thru the entire show. It was an awesome line-up; Zac Wylde, Billy Cox, the drummer and bass player from SRV's band, Buddy Guy and his drummer and bassist, Dweezil Zappa, the guitarist from Indigenous, and a bunch of other notables and greats....

No, I was never a taper. My first Dead show was 89 Rich Stadium Buffalo. I was 17. When band members pulled downloadable soundboard bootlegs from Archive in 2007 (?), I started archiving shows for pleasure and posterity, concerned they’d no longer be available. Dear sweet Jerry. How I miss his music

Btw, seriously rubbish implementation Shanling.
With the horrendous slow ass server from Shanling, every time the screen turns turns off while "downloading" the firmware due to "inactivity", the firmware download stops. You have to keep waking the M8 up and re-tap to continue downloading.
Doesn't Shanling know how to allow firmware to continue downloading in the background? Btw after 30 mins i'm only at 5% 🤦‍♂️

You had issues, I didn't. I am sure the servers are being hammered. I have an idea if you are unhappy with the OTA version, local update...geesh
