Shanling M5 Ultra - High-End MTouch Portable Player

I picked up an M5 Ultra 10th anniversary edition last week. In their marketing material they have this image:

Basic WeChat image translation is:

I asked the dealer if there was any difference in sound between the two, and they gave a reply that could be translated as the 10th model being more nuanced, or delicate.

I've never heard the non-10th anniversary edition so have no point of comparison. I only have about 8 hours on the 10th so far, but like the sound, and particularly love the non-Android pure player aspect of it. It's been a while since I had a DAP, mainly been using Mojopoly and dongles for the last few years. But it all started for me with Cowon DAPs, so there's a sense of coming home with having a pure music DAP again :)

@Shanling can you confirm the battery life on the 10th anniversary M5 Ultra?

The battery life is identical.

@Shanling what the output impedance of 5 Ultra 10th year anniversary?

Same as original, the amplifier circuit was not changed.

That article's text correctly covers the changes on M5 Ultra, but the specification they list is very wrong.

Yes, I asked Deepsek and it told me the differences with the M5 Ultra. The screen is also 5 inches. If anyone is curious, ask Deepsek or Gemini, Chatgpt. It clearly writes the differences.

This is why you should not use such text services to check for such details, because they get it simply wrong.
The screen is same between both versions of M5 Ultra.

The international release of M5 Ultra was planned for this week, hence why there wasn't any official announcement from us yet.

M5 Ultra 10Th Anniversary:
Differences from the standard M5 Ultra:
- Adjusted sound tuning for more analog warmer tone
- Utilizing legacy parts in audio circuit – Panasonic and Elna Silmic II capacitors that are no longer in production
- High-Purity Single-Crystal Copper Internal Wiring
- Golden Wheel with engraved “10"
- Adjusted Graphics in the system

MSRP 599 USD.

I bought M5 Ultra recently - this is my first "real" modern DAP and so far I am quite happy and rather impressed, both by look (although it is quite big, my pockets are small :D), UI, features and sound. No I'm waiting for a case (apparently brown colour is no longer available, pity).

Some small issue with same album names for different artists - songs from different albums appear under one album name in such case.

Question: is there a way to add bookmarks to tracks? It is useful for audiobooks.

BTW I wonder with what headphones people are pairing M5U? Anyone tried some AKG maybe?

Well that is a letdown for me, I thought for a minute when I read the list of features online for the 10th anniversary edition that I might reconsider the M5 Ultra. It had two things listed that would have made it appealing to me. The 64 GB of onboard memory (saving me having to buy a bigger microsd card) and the possibility of better battery life.

I have to wonder who is going to buy this DAP given that all the specs are the same as the original version? The original has been on the market for a year now so most of the people who would buy the M5 Ultra likely already own it. For those that already own it how many would sell their original to buy the 10th anniversary edition?

The push to release more and more powerful DAP's sacrificing battery life in the process disappoints me. I have been listening to my 35 mW per channel A55 for 3 years never needing to turn up the volume dial past 80/120 with any of my headphones. I am someone who would gladly trade some of that power for better battery life, especially since the battery is not easily user replaceable.

As someone who prefers non-android DAP's I would still love to see Shanling release an alternative MTouch DAP with less power and better battery life for those of us who don't need desktop power in a DAP thus offering greater options in their MTouch DAP's. I am really intrigued to see what Fiio will do with the DISCUE non-android DAP with the same X2000 SOC. It might be my last hope for a high audio quality non-android DAP hopefully in my price range.

I will say the more analog warmer tone tuning of the 10th anniversary edition sounds appealing. But not enough to overcome the things that kept me from considering the M5 Ultra in the first place.

For the mathcing album names, so far there was no fix for this in our system.
Only solution would be to manually rename them, to make it a slightly different.

There is no bookmarking function.

Dear @Shanling I'm sad to share that my beloved Shanling M5 Ultra DAP is having some issues with playback of local tracks stored on my SD track. The tracks are stuttering occasionally especially when I take the DAP outside. It seems to happen to one track and gets fixed in the next one.

I'm suspecting my SD card maybe the culprit but if that's not the case what else can be the issue? I never updated the software after buying the Shanling M5 Ultra, when the issue started happening I decided to update to the latest firmware but that did not fix things.

Definitely would recommend trying a different card, ideally freshly formatted at exfat.

Reposting my post from the "Introducing Shanling M5 Ultra..." thread...

Note: Running latest 2.7 firmware

Regarding the Tidal API in the M5 Ultra OG, does anyone else get a very quiet sort of fizzy static at the beginning or in the transition from song to song when streaming Tidal? I've noticed this since I've owned it. My initial thought was it's picking it up from the WiFi, although with WiFi ON playing local files, I don't seem to hear it, it just seems Tidal specific. In a noisy environment you might not hear it but if you're in deep listening mode it's there, at least with my unit.

When I have the unit in BAL LO mode with my A&K PA-10 the quiet fizzy static seems barely audible to inaudible as the connection to the amp somehow absorbs it. It's a very singular behavior as it seems to not be apparent during a song, even a quiet passage, just at the beginning and in the transitions from cut to cut. After that it stops or is inaudible due to the music playing. Not sure if I just have a susceptible unit or it's a bug. If it's a global thing it'd be something that could be looked at in a future firmware up to the Tidal API.

When are we upgrading to m8t @JerryHead . Or should we expect a non-Android Dap in M8t setup from @Shanling 😄
Oh! The M8T looks awesome! Me want! But, where does it end? Is there even such a thing as "end-game?"
Also, personally, the M5U may be warm enough for me. Unsure I would want to go warmer, or smoother..

I can understand your frustration and I agree with you about the 10th year anniversary version. But you have to know we are living in a commercial world. I'm like you too every penny makes a difference especially now when I'm unemployed but to know that this dap is really what I'm looking for and after waited for so long there's still no compromise on the price hate to say I'm giving in not going hope and pray for other brand come out with something as close as m5u with a better price and I bought it, most importantly I have no regret. Maybe I'm just lucky it suit my ears. If you really need a dap m5u does worth it.

Also there is no problem regarding the foreign fonts that appears to be gibberish at least to me none of the Japanese and Chinese fonts which usually are the common culprits.

You can always get a resell if you don't mind. I'm just sharing my thoughts.

I do appreciate your thoughts, I recently sold my business and retired. While I am not starved for cash I am so use to running my business on a budget that I can't seem to let go of that way of thinking. I am turning 61 soon and my hearing isn't what it use to be. I doubt I could hear much of a difference between DAP's anymore. For me the chance to buy a DAP locally is a huge consideration and the M21 is likely the only one I will be able to. The JM21 is carried by 3 dealers close to me so I would guess at least one will also carry the M21 at some point in the future.
