Our last few portable players came with big screens and little bit heavier builds.

Now it's time to go for something little bit smaller, more practical and better fitting into your pockets.

Looks good, but why the old version of Android? Google being dicks about licensing or something?

When it comes to Google and android it is more like hemorrhoids as in a major pain in the backside. :) Google charges big bucks for their licenses and I am guessing the newer the version the higher the licensing fee. They also charge additional fees if you want to use any of their services on top of cost of android. It is easy to see why android based DAP's are so expensive and why I try to avoid them whenever possible. I would rather not pay for all the overhead costs of hemorr... sorry I mean android.

Definitely wait for reviews, and the early bug fixes in the firmware. Some of the tech and OS seems pretty dated, already have the DX160 so it may be it's not much improvement from that.
I’m looking at the ibasso dx160 and hiby r5 also. In your opinion which, if any is better? Also is the WiFi really that bad on the ibasso?

I've only had the DX160. The sound quality is superb, it works well with Amazon HD offline. Lately been pretty good with streaming as well, only issue is if you try to browse for next tracks while playing. I'm finding a lot of skipping when that happens. Overall WiFi could be much improved on it, so I'm curious as to how this M3X will perform as may get one of the streaming is more solid.

I’m in the same boat. I’ve eliminated the DX160 because of Wifi (and BT) issues, also it’s a bit bigger than the other two and battery life is shorter and sometimes unreliable.
The R5 Saber is tempting because it’s on Android 8.1, tiny tiny, and they seem to have gotten rid of the battery swelling issues than ran rampant in the original R5.
The Shanling’s power output is sufficient for my needs, it’s a true pocketable and I really like its DACs, but I’m put off by the older Android, the fact that it is specced closer to the Hiby R3Pro than the R5, and the squat format that I find ugly. I would value more driving power and a more modern architecture over crazy battery life - which brings me closer to the R5S maybe. Also depends where I buy it from.

Yes it’s difficult,I loved the look of iBasso but I’m wary regarding WiFi etc. Now I’m reading about swelling batteries...
Whereabouts are you I’m in uk and struggling to find Hiby r5 . This new Shanling m3x looks good but I don’t know enough about electronics to know if it looks good !
Ahh what to buy!!!

Agree about the look of the iBasso, it’s my favorite.

There are precious few Hiby distributors Europe-wards, and none in the UK that I know of now that amp3 have stopped carrying them. On this page from Hiby’s website you can find all official distributors.

I am on the other side of the pond waiving hello šŸ‘‹
I would import mine from Hifigo if I go the R5 route. Shipping is free, they charge in $ which means the exchange rate is great when you pay in €, and VAT is taken care of, so it’s like a huge rebate every time. No so-called ā€œadministrative feesā€ from Fedex or UPS either. They are where I got the Khadas unit in my signature, everything went without a hitch, but they are licensed by Khadas. Buying iBasso from them for instance is more risky, since they are not licensed if your unit fails you not only have to ship it back to China, they then have to ship it to iBasso for repair; so warranty does work but with additional delays. I would be hesitant buying expensive stuff from them, but for a sub-$400 DAP I think I’d risk it.

On the other hand the Shanling M3X will be more widely distributed and covered by local warranty etc. More peace of mind. It’s a bit less impressive specs-wise but if the hardware is well implemented it will be a killer device.

Hiby r5s is on Amazon uk now, or you can (I think) order from musicteck in the states, but run the risk of taxes that way. To get it back on track the m3x is available to preorder from hifi headphones.co.uk.

Hi. Yes have seen the r5 saber at Amazon but £399 bit steep ... can get 15%discount on m3x brings it to £282.
