How does your biggie pair with m3s ?

Really well. The $60 Biggie (80Ω, 114dB/mW, 17Hz-22KHz, Plastic housing, 1x Dynamic) is plenty loud (in my quiet living room) with the Volume set at 24 with Gain=Low. It also has better clarity & micro-detail than my more expensive earphones (Hotfi HM1 (2016), LZ A4, TingJie R4 (4in1), Rose Aurora).

Playing the Amber Rubarth album - Sessions from the 17th Ward (2012), which is one of the Chesky Binaural recordings, the spatial cues are very clear for the sound stage.
Here's a short video, showing the setup they used -

It is a very good sounding DAP..a little brighter sounding than the M2s and quite a bit more clarity.

What is the clicking I hear coming out of my M3s? Is this the various audio/DAC components switching themselves on/off?

When I press 'pause', after about 30 seconds, I hear a click (not through the headphones). Then when I press 'pause' again to resume playback, I hear that click again and it takes 3-5 seconds before music starts playing again. Is this normal?

Totally normal. It's the relays.

Thanks. One more newbie question: I have a lot of 2-hour sets (in MP3 format). When I fast forward through them, often times it takes upwards of 15 seconds for audio to resume playing again from the moment I let go off the FF button. Is this normal as well?

My only point of reference/comparison is a cheap Sansa Clip Plus player running Rockbox where there is no such delay at all when fast forwarding through the same long audio files.

I noticed this only happens on MP3 files using VBR (encoded using LAME 3.99r in Foobar2000). I tried using the "Fix VBR MP3 header" and "Rebuild MP3 Stream" options in Foobar2000, but it did not help with my issue. I guess I am going to have to stay away from MP3 VBR from now on, unless there is another solution?

Tips and FAQ

How does the digital filters change the sound?

In M3s we use AKM AK4490 DAC and AKM prepared this useful chart explaining the functions of different filters and their effect on sound:
I assume this is talking about the M3s setting called "Lowpass Filter Mode"?

In FW version 1.2, these filters are named somewhat differently in the UI:

  • Sharp
  • Slow
  • Short Delay Sharp
  • Short Delay Slow
Apologies if this was previously discussed.

Look like the exact same names, just with a different order, and with "roll-off" left off... at least, that's how I interpreted it :) . Can't say that I actually heard a lot of difference between the 4, tbh, but it may be just my ears that are not good enough.

Could you please upload somewhere one of these sets and send it to me in PM to test out? Thanks

Yes, it's for setting that we call Lowpass Filter.
