This is perhaps the most insane thing I've seen on Head-Fi this month. Of course "update library" should update the library, not append files. It sounds like you're saying that every time a new file is added, a database update will duplicate all the existing files as well, which is not how any media player should operate, nor how any media player has operated since the days of the Creative Nomad.

We are here talking only about "Specified folder update", not about standard full library update. This function was added as simple way how to add new files into current library without need for full library scan.

Hi @Shanling

I have a question. Is it possible to turn off the clock completely? It seems that in previous firmware it was possible, but I cant find any option in the current one to do it, only to change from 12 to 24 hours... ? Thank you!!

Just to be correct here:
- the library scan is very, very slow
- the scan is not bullet proof. I do have at least one folder with duplicated titles (shows up fine under "folder") and one where only parts of the folder made it into the database
- even if I scan only a specific folder I would expect that the result reflects the reality. But it is a simple "add" and the database content for that folder (including all subfolders) will not be cleared before the scan, instead the result of the scan will simply be added to the existing entries in the database. How does that makes sense? I can't think of a situation where this is the result I'm looking for?!
- there is no option to reset the database. Instead you have to enter a 2nd sd-card scan this one, then reinsert the original sd-card and scan this again.
- the database has no entries for the genre or rating of a file. It is not easy to organise a large amount of files without

IMHO the quality of the internal database doesn't reflect the quality of the hardware. If you have a large amount of files on the M2X you need a high motivation to work with the device. But software can improve over time and I like the engagement Shanling shows in respect of customer complains.

So I remember trying the equalizer on the M2s and I thought it was terrible, it just wrecked the sound no matter how you used it, so I just left it off all the time. However, I just tried raising the bass a little bit on the M2X to get a bit of a warmer sound, and... lo and behold, it did what its supposed to do and I got a nice-sounding, bassy M2X!!

I'm curious, @Shanling or any user who would like to share... has the EQ been vastly improved in this model, as compared to the M2s? Has anyone tried the M2X EQ and found the same thing, that it's actually really good, or do you have a different opinion...? Thanks for any thoughts about this.

EQ system in MTouch is different from M2s. So far we have mixed reactions, some people find it working nicely, some others are saying it's horrible and demand more advanced system. We are continuously looking for some other EQ system that could be implemented, offering more DSP functions.

Thanks for your feedback. When I make large adjustments with it I do hear clipping and it's not good, but with slight adjustments (adding just a little more bass to the 31HZ - 250HZ bands.... like 1db each or less) I find it works very well, making the player sound a bit warmer without any negative effects.

Does that match the feedback of others? It works, but only if used moderately.

Yes, mostly people wishing for big adjustments find the EQ not ideal for their needs.

Does the M5s use exactly the same type of EQ as the M2x? If I search this thread

https://www.head-fi.org/threads/sha...-2way-ldac-bt-3-2-touch-screen-fw-3-1.886502/

and read about people's experiences with the EQ, does it directly apply to the M2x too?

I ask because there's so little conversation in this M2x thread. I'm not quite sure why, it's a great player.

I know this unit was designed for Tidal. I am hoping that in a future firmware there can be explicit support for Amazon HD including downloads to the SD card. I know that the Amazon HD service came out of the blue; but my bet is that two years from now this will be the dominant music playing app for people seeking musical fidelity. I really like the idea of this unit as an upgrade from my well loved M2S. The M2S was my first Shanling unit that has been nearly perfect for my daily needs, though since the M2S I picked up two other very solid Shanling units.

It's the same system, but as M5s sounds different from M2X, not all experiences with EQ will be identical.

Not sure why there is less traffic in M2X's thread, we sell much more M2X than M5s.

This is all about streaming company willing to work with us on implementation of their system. Tidal for example is very open and worked with us. But for something like Spotify or Amazon Music? They don't aim at audiophile market, so they don't care about small audiophile manufacturers.

Offline mode is not likely outside of official app. We assume that's limitation from music companies, that are afraid of possible piracy.

Looks like an Android derived unit is in my future. The Shanling M6 certainly looks promising. It would appear that the relatively inexpensive FIIO M6 has whitelisted the app and it may allow downloads! I haven't bought a FIIO in a while but might look into that. Sometimes my eyes get big and I want every possible feature, which would lead to a Shanling M6. Then I look for price/performance when I look at the bank balance. Something of of pull going on there.

I'm curious about how you'd compare/describe the sound from the M2s to the other two Shanling units you own, whatever they are. :)

I currently own the M0 and M2S. The M2S has a warm soundj; the M0 is fairly neutral. The M1 that I did own was a bit muddier than the M2S but similar. The M2 that I started with I think was fairly neutral but it was a long time ago.

I agree with you about the M2s, warm sound. The M2X definitely sounds more neutral to me. In most respects I think it's probably superior to the M2s, but I miss the M2s warmth and musicality on certain neutral-sounding tracks so I've been using the EQ a bit to compensate for the difference when I use Etymotics, as they are also neutral. With BLONs, which are bass heavy, the M2X sounds great to me and no EQ needed.
