Shanling M0 Pro - Ultra-Portable Hi-Fi Player, Now With Balanced Output!

2,5mm to 4,4mm (and vice versa) adapters are a norm, whether you like it or not.
All smaller DAP's (so far) either have a 2,5mm balanced out or no balanced out at all.
Life sucks

So short impressions mostly from usability perspective.

Disclaimer: it may sound as I am nitpicking and this is negative review, but to be honest I really like this device, functionality, niche place it has in the market and how it fills this place. If the BT connectivity turns out reliable it may have a chance to replace my favourite audio source of all time Qudelix 5k.

- this thing is very cute, but extremely small. I am a sucker for small devices in general for portability, and modern high end DAPs are my worst enemy because of that, but this is on the opposite extreme of the size. It may be too small. My thumb is like one third of the screen size. The fonts are very thin and small and connected with low Res screen they are barely readable. Reading long song titles is pain in the ass.

- the size gets me plenty of perks on the other hand - it just blends in my pocket (which may be a bad thing as you may loose track of where it is). It does not weigh anything so it does not pull my pyjama pants down while night cooking :D. It is perfect for bed as it is not likely to hit me in the head or to drop on the floor getting destroyed or destroying my tiles as some M17s or DX300s would do. It also fits snuggly in my IEM case with pair of tips - PERFECT

- overall user experience is not perfect coming from Sony ZX300a DAP. There everything is basically 3 clicks away. In M0 Pro to get out of the play now to playback option you need several swipes. Also it is not buttery smooth in here.

- battery seems really good, but need more testing - after 2-3h of mixed listening (IEMs on low gain, high impedance buds (500Ohm Serratus) and 24h of standby I lost one bar.

- did not test the BT connectivity yet

- the sound is on par with my other portable devices at least like Qudelix5k, Sony DAP. No nuance is lost, bass is tight, dynamics are great, nothing is softened or oversharpened. Just like a transparent source (as it should be IMO). Did not compare with DX3pro+ yet.

- it can drive anything I throw at it sufficiently. IEMs like UM Mest OG, Xinhs Erasmus are obviously no problem on Low gain, 500Ohm Serratus on single ended (no adapter at my distributor) I needed to push at 70% high gain and it still sounded pleasing. I think that on balanced I feel more comfortable though.

- build quality is almost perfect. One small nitpick is the volume wheel sometimes skips, is somewhat loose and not clicky enough (at least comparing with Shanling Q1).

First impressions: 9/10. This is probably not a perfect device for most hardcore audiophiles, but for what it is apart from some minor quirks it does what it is supposed to do very well. Probably also the target user is more someone from general consumer market treating this as an entry device to the high end audio. And here M0 Pro also fits like a glove.

I attach pictures for reference.
Is your sound test with the balanced adapter?

Where did you hear about that? Is it an R2 Gen 2? Will it have a 4.4 balanced?
Might hold off if that's the case. I quite liked my R3.
Nobody, other than you, mentioned 4,4 jack on Hiby R2.
4.4 or 2.5 it does not matter. what i meant is that it will not compete with the shanling M0 pro. Ah! and i was talking about the future Hiby r2 ii and not the r2 first gen. Leggi bene la prossima volta, nel caso ci fossero errori grammaticali ed è questo il motivo per cui tu non hai capito, mi scuso io.

Why not ?

Early info here

February launch. IMHO, definitely worth waiting and doing a back-to-back comparison.

@Shanling after almost 2 days with this DAP I can almost certainly say that I would keep it close to my heart

However couple of points I am putting to consider from usability petspective to your development team which in my opinion could make this device even better :)
- it would be ideal to get access to quick menus from the play now screen as it is from Main Menu (swipe up opening access to Bluetooth, screen brightness etc). Now there are 2 gestures completely not usable from this play now screen, which is a waste in such a small devices with limited input options (buttons).
- the option selection from this quick menu is also not the most fortunate in my opinion. While Bluetooth is perfectly usable, playback option selection is also understandable, but having half of the screen for screen brightness is somehow a waste. I don't believe a lot of people would adjust it very often to be honest. My proposition is LO/PO switch and Low and High gain switch instead of that. Available on swipe up or swipe down from Play Now menu. Similarly to Q1.
- the other swipe could be used to get back to the current selection type main screen (but not current playback as on swipe right). So for example I am playing album of certain artist after searching by artist and on swipe up I go back to all artist list. Or if I searched for album I go back to all album list.

What do you think about those options?

I placed an order for an M0 Pro and it's been shipped so I will post my review here once I get it. I might also do a YouTube review since there are none on there currently. This will be my first DAP and I'm still learning so it might not be the most in depth review but I will contribute what i can. Very exited to receive my unit.

Access to quick menus would be a perfect update. I was looking at the Hidizs AP80 Pro X since it has a bigger screen and so it had a better UI with quick menus but decided on the Shanling for its beautiful size. @Shanling, please consider this for a future update. It would be very useful and a good use of the gestures that are not being used.

- We asked software team to look for ways to incorporate the swipe up menu into now playing screen.
- The choice of functions in the menu are highly dependent on personal preferences, we do not believe gain changes and Lineout on M0 Pro is that often accessed.
- Our system doesn't really support that at current time.

Hi. I’m eyen the Shanling M0 Pro for my firs DAP. Can this work as a transport to an external DAC using its USB output for sending digital audio (and bypassing its own DAC)?
Yes, it works that way.

Thanks for reply.
For the second one I understand that it is highly subjective and probably more fitting to average customer than to audiophile . If you did your due diligence on the target market, and it is what it was then I am fine with that :)
In regards to the third one - I think that would be really useful for handling as now from Play Now you are always min 2, sometimes 3 away from the next usable menu. Not the end of the world obviously, just something to consider while implementing next FW release :)

@Shanling I just got my M0 pro yesterday. Features and sound fits with this price range. However, I got 2 problems:

1. I am not able to see m0 pro in my iPhone Eddict Player -> SyncLink list. I tried BT paired with my iPhone, or not paired, and cleared the SyncLink connected devices list, all doesn't help the issue. Note that I am able to use Eddict Player SyncLink feature to browse and play songs with M3 Ultra and M7 without problems. I guess this can be solved by firmware update?

2. LDAC with audio quality priority setting, and connect with Sony XM4 (TWS) works, but the connection is so weak that it will break even with my hand between m0 pro and xm4. This makes the LDAC connection nearly useless to me (haven't tried with LDAC with connection priority setting, as I really want to have the best sound).

1. Synclink for M0 Pro is not compatible with iOS. Not sure if this is something we can adjust in the future.

2. Will report to engineers for a check.
