I haven't found any impressions thread about this so I'll try asking in here.
Has anyone done the IE800 reshell from Lear? The one here:
http://www.lear-eshop.com/products/lear-resheliing-for-sennheiser-ie800

This looks like it converts the IE800 into a detachable cable CIEM, but I'm a bit puzzled by the image. It seems they enclose the whole thing inside the acrylic, and I don't see any ports on it. What are those IE800 ports firing into then, a sealed chamber?

I see the two ports on the  back in the photo. It looks like maybe they just rehouse the IEM?

I am not sure what they do but it looks like the remove the cable and rewire it so that it can fir a mmcx connection? Wonder as well what happens to the acoustics when you encase it like this.

My understanding is that they encase the IE800 housing in an acrylic outer shel and they rewire for mmcx. They don't tamper with the original IE800 shell, they just rewire for mmcx on the existing IE800 cables. But the original IE800 housing that sits inside the acrylic still has the 2 ports. Are there no ports on the acrylic?

that looks about right judging from the photo. There doesn't seem to be any ports from the photo. Honestly, I would rather keep my IE800 just the way they are rather than reshell them like that.

I think they look fine. Do I wish the cables would detach, yes but only if sennhesier were to do so on the original construction. Bypassing the undetachable cables just seems unnecessary and excessive.

Agreed.

Judging from photo, such reshell (overshell actually) is very strange, not to say stupid. It will affect the sound greatlly. Plain custom eartips are way more wise solution in this case.

I would also recommend custom tips if someone wants to go custom.

not saying that a reshell would be bad by default, but I would just go with custom tips if I wanted to. I like ie800 being small and love their ceramic surface

Has anyone tried their custom tips (Lear) ? They are cheaper than Snugs it seems.

Covering the ports negatively affects SQ. That's stupid

My serial number is 39xxx. Does that mean 39,000+ of these have been produced? Also, the serial number is only on the plaque in the case, nowhere else including the outer box. Can others confirm theirs are like this as well?

They are sealed with 2 round stickers but never shrinked wrapped. Only the fakes are shrinked wrapped.

Quick question, is the IE 800 box sealed when brand new/authentic?

Amazon is fulfilling my purchase, but the retailer selling the IE 800 looks to be new, and a search for its website comes up empty.

All this talk about fake versions has me worrying a bit ...

Yes, thank you, my box was sealed with two round stickers.

On another matter, my IE 800 has 100 hours on it and I am so happy with the sound. I'm listening to New Order's, Complete Music, and I'm in heaven right now.
