Also have both and of course soundstage is larger on HD800S but the more intimate sound of the HD820 is sometimes all I want.
Being on my 8th pair of HD800S I just smile when I read all the comments of lacking bass or the call for a new updated version…my current serial number is 43 785 and the bass is better than ever before.
Agree- even though the hd820 still has one of the best soundstages I’ve heard.

hd800 also have among the most accurate timbre I’ve heard and transparency is still among the best of all hp

Hopefully I will be able to to get the hd800s at the same price again. The hd820 are super nice and sound good but I wanted the hd800s not a closed back trying to sound like the hd800s

I recently acquired a sennheiser HD820.

Shanling H7 didnt drive well due to not sufficent power.

Bought micro iDSD signature. I loved the way HD820 sounded. Atleast i felt to retain it and my ears love them more now. Its a very capable headphoje and also very source picky. It defintely requires a good amount of power.

Another observation is, i auditioned HD800s , Final Audio D8000/ D8000 pro which also i loved them.
Sennheiser HD820, HD800s, final audio D8000, D8000 pro sounds pretty good with tube amps.

Didnt like meze emperyian or elite or focal utopia compared to above mentioned

Now HD820 become one of my favourites. I am planning to buy a FELIKS echo or esspresivo or elemental watson tube amp to pair it and use shanling H7/ MICRO iDSD signature

I always look for a good sound stage, good bass extension, musical and warmth signature while not compromising on details.
Now HD820 is almost a prefect and i would rate atleast very good for all the above mentioned qualities. For a closed back I would say this is the best in can get below 2000 USD.

Sony MDR Z1R is a really good closed back dynamic driver headphone too! I have both headphones and enjoy them equally.

I've tried today head to head HD820 with XLR and HD800S with 6.3 mm unbalanced and HD800S sounded so ordinary...and low in volume too...I was actually almost terrified. I will change tomorrow 6.3 to 4.4 mm balanced and see how that works. I couldn't imagine that much of a difference. This 6.3 mm is completely useless for these headphones.

Cheers!

The quality isn't determined by the connector (or even balanced/unbalanced), but by the amp 🤦

If you're running the 6.3mm off the SE output of the balanced amp, of course it's not going to sound as good. It's designed for balanced.

Sound leakage on a closed back?
Yes because for many, there isn't a tight seal and they leak sound more than a closed back would be expected to.

Depends if it's an analog I digital amps.

Analog amps do not change the sound on SE, they just have less volume
