Sennheiser HD800 S Impressions Thread (read first post for summary)

Hey Rob! I was able to hear back, and I can confirm that the HD 800S cable’s wrapping was changed around 2018 to make it more durable... so you are correct! With that said, my stock HD 800 cable is still in good shape (and it’s at least 5 years older), but still it’s good news for people that get a new HD 800S (or HD 8XX).
Sadly # 3 has bitten the dust..gummy and cracked again, that is 3 Sennheiser balanced cables in 6 years. : ( Never experienced that with any other cable… ever!

The oil from my skin myst be caustic with whatever rubber they use with HD800…unfortunately it’s a commonly reported issue…so not just me.
I’ve contacted Sennheiser once more but will be going 3rd party regardless.

Looking at this one, bit heavy looking though for 3m.

Rubber and oil don’t mix. Learned that from krown oil treatments to my car.

Most are reporting no problems at all, mind you I use mine almost daily except until recently as I've been using the AKG K872 and Focal Elgia on a rotating basis. And just the other day I was convinced they really did change the composition in the rubber, must have jinxed it....Oddly it is always the left side????

To bad for the whiskers, at least it shouldn't effect sound till it’s replaced.

I have a Hart cable for my 800S and it's ideal for using those headphones on multiple amps. That is one headphone on which you do not want to frequently switch the cable, and the modular system makes it much easier to bounce between amps.
I've asked a quote for an 8' with XLR but still might consider the modular although I'm not a big fan of multiple connections. In an ideal world I'd hard-wire the headphones to the amp. : )

I have changed the factory cable to this (presumably) silver cable from Aliexpress: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004028125862.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.0.0.1b151802PYBhbD

I've used it for about 3 weeks now.

The bass became faster, tighter and more punchy, maybe goes lower in frequencies and the sound became (somewhat) clearer and more detailed. It doesn't hurt my ears, the sound became almost magical with some tracks.

If I have to put a percentage on it, I would say, the overall SQ improved about 8-12% which is significant, considering the low price of this cable, and it already sounded good with the factory cable.

It is also more comfortable: lighter and shorter (1.25m), though the color may not be the best, but acceptable.

With this cable, rock music is more enjoyable on the HD800S, since the most noticable improvement is in the bass.

I highly recommend it, I may even sell the factory cables, so I get even.
