I def felt like i was missing out of the potential of the soundstage with just using the hugo 2. if i can sell the hdv 820 for a price that works for me i would like to upgrade to a rogue rh-5 or a mcintosh mha100. If i can't get the price i want the combo of the hdv 820 and hugo 2 is very wide/spacious.
I am curious, is there a reason why you are selling your HDV820? Currently i have it in my purchasing list.

Listening to it right now, tidal hifi on lenovo laptop>audioquestquest pearl usb>hugo 2>stock single ended cable>hd800s. I am no hip hop fan but feels like i am listening to them record in the studio. Crystal clear and accurate. Perfect bass, no distortion.
to my mind i wish i was capable of getting more bass. that's just my opinion but for my own experience it's something missing.

I want to make room for a different piece. If you are interested in the 820, send me a message and we can talk.

I just picked up these cans, the HD800S, and coming from He-500's, combined with a Chord Mojo I found with some tracks these cans can make drums sound weak, low quality and distorted.

In the song, "This is me" from the soundtrack "The greatest showman ensemble", at 1:30, the kick drum sounds like its struggling and appears to be distorting. The soundstage appears very small. When listening on my he-500's or even Oppo pm1s, this track sounds much more alive, wider and has energy.

Please take a listen on your HD800S -

Is it my Chord Mojo? The mastering of the track? Combination?

I like these cans but it seems I can only play classical to enjoy them, as anything else seems to lack the body of what my other planar magnetic cans offer.

I have no comment regarding the Mojo and HD800S (haven’t heard the pairing), but my wife has that soundtrack and it’s horribly mastered... lots of distortion.

Ooo! You can use the DAC discretely with the Hugo? It’s not a line-level mode?
Well ch and TT both have line level out if you want to use that assigned voltage out. Hugo only has rca, TT offers balanced xlr out. You can vary the voltage by adjusting volume, but either way Hugo amp is bypassed.

The designer has repeatedly said that the ‘line-out’ is nothing more than a shortcut to a specific volume and that there is no hardware bypass in his designs, from Mojo to DAVE.

If you take a regular DAC, like the Auralic Vega and compare that against the Chord Hugo, you will see you have to put the Chord Hugo near maximum to level match the output signal of the Auralic Vega.

So there doesn't seem to be much amplifications happening with the Hugo in comparison to other DAC's.

I can definitely recommend the McIntosh MHA100. It's lovely with the HD800S and the bass boost is amazing. Just need 2.5db for me. Add in Sonarworks True-Fi and it's magical for all genures.

....
Not my taste in music but the recording IMHO does sound "low quality and distorted", the 800 will not ameliorate the situation.

I have no comment regarding the Mojo and HD800S ........lots of distortion.

Ditto

it took TT for me to get ya, that hd800S is getting good. Then I added gsx mk2 and another hey this is pretty good, even better. Then added antipodes audio dsgt, and wow, this is humming now. So scale is a factor if that’s what it is for hd800S

Exactly my experience as well (even when listening to higher volume than I'd be comfortable with for a longer period of time) and this is with Spotify and the humble LH Labs Geek Out 2A Infinity (stock balanced cable).

What a wonderful headphone,.............:k701smile:

Have to agree, I've had mine for almost 2 years but just got around to pulling out some of my older Depeche Mode albums..."Ultra" and "Violate"..totally enjoyable...base had decent weight and extension and there were all kinds of details in the mix I failed to notice previously.
