Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

Does anyone have experience with the HD650 and the MacBook using a Fii0 E11  or E12 amp. Will the portable work or is this wishful thinking. The Mac book gives me a lot volume at less then the half way mark.

This would be very useful if anyone could do this. Listen to 3 songs for me, considering the HD650's or a Stax. Thanks so much to whoever does this. could be multiple people too

Also, the 650's don't destroy bad recordings right? What I'm looking for in the first song, is if it is speedy, the other 2, if it sounds good.. Please note what amp your using, thanks so much guys!

Are you using a DAC? Regardless, I tried the HD600 w/ the Fiio E12, and it was fine. If you were able to pay a bit more, I'd recommend the Neco Soundlab V3. Excellent portable amp w/ the HD600/HD650!

I had experience with HD650 + FiiO E11 combo and it totally suck. If I wouldn't get better amp I would sell them, because with E11 it's just bad. (at least to my ears)

Thanks for the reply. So the E12 works well, I have no external Dac. The next post said he tried the E11 and it didn't work well. I will look at the Neco but I never heard of it. Not sure if you are saying to go with the e 12 not many portables are recommended and at that price point with the HD12 it would be nice. I just heard about the Fii0 so much on this site it became familiar to me. Is the E9/e07k a better pair with the HD650 than the E12??

The E9 is a desktop amp. While the E12 rivals it in power, the internals don't match the E9/E9K. Still for a portable, that would be my first choice.

Just want to check do you mean the E12 will work just fine. So I will not have to go overboard with desk tops and tube amps and Dacs and be able to get most of the quality sound out of the HD650.
Thanks

The E12 will work just fine. The E09K is even better, but its not portable. After an amp like the E09K, you get increasingly less performance to dollar ratio; the HD650 will sound better, but it will cost you more and more to get the best possible sound. For me personally, the next step is the Schiit Lyr or build a Bottlehead Crack w/ Speedball. Either way, its more than $400...and then you'll want the best tubes! But w/ the E09K, the music is just sooo good, whether its a deep impactful drums of Sigur Ros or Schubert's String Quartets. I'm going to cut my losses for a while and settle; maybe I'll save up for a tube amp next year! So yeah, either the E12 or the E09K are a great place to start! :)

1. Song - Not sure if I can objectively say whether it's fast or not :frowning2: . Anyway sounds fine to me like nearly everything on HD650
2. Song - This is not my kind of music at all, so not sure if I can comment on this one, but it's definitely not bad in way how it sounds, I just don't like this genre.
3. Song - Sounds great like all other rock stuff I listen to on HD650 (Guitars are just excellent)

Hope it helps at least a little :)

Yea exactly, I said in some post that my HD650 is "jumping on my head", it was maybe bit of overstatement, but yes bass with this setup is awesome.

Some day I would like to try HD600 too, to see the difference between these two miracles

Ironically I actually like the HD600 a little more than the HD650 (Yet I have the HD650 instead due to how many factors came together). They aren't terribly different but I still think there is enough difference that I was able to immediately hear when I first had both of them to try out. I plan to get the HD600 again in the near future. This judgement however, was back when I didn't have much equipment to test out with. Perhaps now when I plug both senns in, the HD650 might sound better but who knows until I try again :p

On another note, I recently received my Lyr and it really sounds as good as everyone has been saying. Such smoothness and so much clarity. I plugged my HE-400 in first and the improvement was great but didn't impress me as much because I have a Marantz receiver that actually pairs with the HE-400 very well (maybe a bit more to my liking than the pairing with the Lyr). The HD650 and the Lyr with some nice jazz tracks was really something to die for. All I can say is the HD650 is no joke.

Thanks so much, it helped a lot:). So the HD650 is good with all genres? And it doesn't destroy bad recordings right? Because I'm mainly looking for a headphone thats good for synthesizer and electronic sounds. Any recommendations of headphones for this type of music?

The HD650 definitely don't destroy bad recordings in my experience so you should be great there. Compared to other headphones, these are probably one of the more forgiving ones.

I listen to a lot of EDM and the HD650 do handle the music admirably well. These headphones are pretty good with any genre but they definitely aren't the best for EDM. While they do sound great, sometimes the sound is too smooth for me. A lot of people have had no problems with the HD650 and EDM though, so maybe I'm just a bit too picky. As for other recommendations, I'm not sure whats best suited for you but I do like using the HE-400 with EDM.
