LOL Sounds like a very classy, well to do gangster :p

When I first bought the HD650's I actually didn't like the way it handled EDM. After quite a bit of time with them now though I believe they handle it pretty well.  Definitely not the best but they are surprisingly good at it. (more than some people may give it credit for) I still believe the HD600 do a slightly better job with EDM though.

Starting today, I'm putting the 650 head to head against the he-4. At the end of the weekend there will be a winner...only one can stay!!

Actually, yea... I find the HD-650's don't do hip-hop very well (but, incidentally, it does electronica very well).

With the HD-650, hip-hop isn't so much of a "yo! I'm a mutha-screwin' gangsta!", but it's more of a "Hi there. I am a gangster."

Funniest post I've read in a while

. It's true though.

Hi guys,

Since I'm really considering buying HD650, can you please give your opinion if you thinks it suits (or doesn't) my needs? It'll mean a lot to me.

My thread is this one.

Thanks!

After reading your post, I think you will be very happy with the HD650s. The Apogee should drive them sufficiently, and the sound signature should be right in line with your preferences (sibilance? What sibilance?

).

Didn't know you picked up an HE-4?  Even though you have HE 400 already? Are they that different?

Yes, the 4 and the 400 and quite different. In short the he4 is more balanced with no spike in the upper treble, has smoother richer mids and is a good bit lighter than the he400. It gives up a modest amount of visceral bass impact to the he400.

Thank you for the complements.

And, yes... the HD-650 isn't necessarily perfect for electronica, but it's good enough, I personally think, to use as a daily driver for it.

But, yes, given electronica IME is best played on neutral speakers/headphones (a pair of studio monitors I had were the best out of all my audio products for it), I can see how an HD-600 would be much better for it.

Is there a genre that the 650's don't do well? I've yet to find it.

A timeless classic. That whole album was miked so unbelievably well!

When Coltrane starts his solo at the 2:46 mark of Flamenco Sketches (alternate take), I swear it sounds like you are inside his saxophone.

With a little encouragement from the forum, I picked up the 650's and a o2 amp. What has surprised me the most(and I am ready to be flamed) is how much I am enjoying the 650's with some old gear I drug out of a closet. I dusted off an old Sony ES receiver, an old Arcam CD player and threw on the old Alison Krauss " A Hundred Miles or More" cd and I am SO very happy with the 650's. I am sure all of this is miles from "today's gear" but I guess if I am happy life is good? Maybe this is a testament to just how good the 650's are making anything they are paired with seem as good or better than should be expected.
I am in as another 650 lover!
Regards to all,
Greg

I got a little dilema, Amazon had the 650 for $399 about two weeks ago for a couple hours then it was gone.  My 2nd choice headphones Beyer 990 Premium 600 OHMS just dropped to $315.  Now that the 650 are at $499, are they nearly $200 better than the 990?  I will soon have a woo audio wa6, I listen to hip hop, rap, rock, a little classical. Mainly hip hop.

thx

I listen to my HD 650 out of a WA6 and I can tell you that the pairing is absolutely sublime. As far as rock goes, absolutely top notch. Classical is also brilliant although I wish the soundstage could just be a little bit wider. However, if you've read the posts above, you'll find that the HD 650 is very polite when it comes to Hip Hop or Rap. Personally, I like that sound, but if you want something a bit more punchy then maybe not the HD 650.

Having said all of that, I borrowed my friends Beyer 990 and it just doesn't make the cut. Firstly, it requires a lot more power. the WA6 with stock tubes is not gonna be able to drive it well. You'd be looking at a 6GL7 tube upgrade to get more gain and power which is another $100+ anyway. As far as sound goes, I'd easily invest an extra $300 for the HD 650s.
