That's a good price. But I'm okay paying $30 more for NIB. I don't plan to sell mine ever so I don't want any issues with warranty should it ever come up.

LOVE them!

ODAC>A-GD SA-31>HD650.

Those mids.... haven't heard anything like it! The bass is nice and full, and there is NO veil. I've wasted almost 3 years waiting to listen to these, because I was afraid of the 'veil'. Perhaps the older ones had a veil, but these silver screened ones sure don't.

What?!!! I remember trying to convert you to the HD650 a few years ago and you said NEVER! LOL! Better late than never. Oh, and I told you so.

Hey, but maybe back then it was the black drivers, which were veiled. :p

I'm still not an HD650 person in terms of a main can, but it sure is nice as a compliment.

I must say, I don't like the stock HD650 cable. Seems cheap, and I feel the point where the Left and Right channels merge on the cable is too close/high up on the cable.

Might have to get an aftermarket one.

Something like this:

If you're careful you can cut off that black part and split the cable to make it extend further down (I used an HD-650 cable on my HD-598 once and had to do this

.)
Or you can make a DIY version for under $40. The expensive part is buying the $20 Cardas connectors.
Then all the shipping costs. Starquad wire doesn't require any sleeving either. Well, just past the Y-split.

I think Zombie_X might be able to make you one with Mogami or something else for cheaper than that one in the link.
Canare stinks with the HD-650 IMO. I think Belden 1192A would be what i'd use.

I agree with everything you're saying, I am adding more to your list, like Ed8 (very nice bass however), the 'in'-famous Ed10, PS1000, sometimes GS-1000 and RS-1 can be nice too
Have you compared to ATH-AD2000?  Just wondering what's your thought comparing the two.

Thanks for the reply. I haven't heard the AD2000 but did like the GS-1000 at a meet (my favorite Grado if this is the one with the larger ear-pads?) and the RS-1s are certainly great cans. Again though, comfort and price along with diminishing return improvements (differences

) in some areas haven't convinced me to buy them. I have heard good things about the AD2000s and would very much like to hear them as well.

x2 on Mogami if you can DIY a cable yourself or get someone to do it. No need to pay the markup for boutique unobtanium. DHC Molecule isn't a bad alternative but I actually preferred the fuller sound of the more affordable Mogami. Mine was a garden hose though compared to the thinner, lighter and more flexible Molecule.

Big thumbs up for Toxic Cable Silver Poison's as upgrades for the HD650's.....

I used a Zu, Cardas and Q cable w/ earrings on the HD650. All were upgrades from the stock cable. But Q takes the cake in everything.
Build quality, weight and flexibility is second to none.

Wow, I am shocked that you like them!  They are one of my favorite, if not my favorite cans for the last 5 years. I really did not think you would like them based on your criteria.

They aren't what I usually go for, but for a secondary purpose, they are amazing. I must say that having low expectations made the end result even sweeter. I honestly thought I was gonna hate them. Im in love with its vocals. It sounds sultry and organic. A rare trait.

Im also very surprised at how gorgeous they look in person too. I was expecting the typical Sennheiser plastic feel. But these are just lovely to see in person. Those grills... im a sucker for sexy grills.

Excellent description. They really grow on you the more you listen to them as well.

So my goal is to get a Bifrost and a Valhalla for my HJD650 but... I don't have that kind of money yet and I would like to start off with something CHEAP.

Do any of you have any recommendations for a AMP/DAC that is cheap/affordable and okay-ish for a starting point? Around $150-$200 USD maybe.
