Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

The 650s sounded amazing with the HiFiman EF5. Totally awesome sound out of the box.

My EF5 was defective, so I returned it, and got the Lyr instead, because I see it as an amp that can grow with me as I keep delving deeper into the hifi mire. Silly me, I should have read these forums in more detail before ordering the Lyr with the JJs tubes. Schiit is sending me out another set to try.

Can anyone recommend a good SS amp for the 650's?

My LittleDot MK IV SE does a pretty good job driving them, but I think i need to up the gain a bit. They are waaay less sensitive than my beyer T70's.

Currently I use my iBasso D6 as a DAC with line out to the LD using a 3.5mm to RCA adapter.

It works perfect with my Beyers, just seems a little low with the Senns. It might be due to slightly higher impedance and lower sensitivity. I have the gain set to 5, I'm gonna try upping it to 10. Nothing is missing SQ wise, in-fact drums sound absolutely amazing with the 650's.

I did just order a Schiit Bifrost today, so we'll see how that goes when it arrives.

I'm not sure how much of an upgrade it would be in quality, but the Audio-gd Compass (the built in DAC is pretty decent too after listening for like 5-15min then I switched to my DLIII lol) is nice with the 650s. Depending on the day, I listen between 7 o'clock and 2 o'clock, and I probably don't have the best hearing in terms of how loud things are to me.

I've been looking into the NFB5 for a while now as a SS amp. i'll probably end up getting one soon.

I really like the Graham Slee Solo SRG II. My understanding is that it has often been used at trade shows to demo the HD650s, so it seems like a pretty natural pair. Also goes great with my D7000s. :)

What is the going price of a new HD650 nowadays?

If you check used you can easily get them for around $300. From a retailer, such as the kind that sell off Amazon as "other sellers" you can often get stuff marked as "used" that was merely opened and returned.

I got mine for a little over $300 "used" and when they came in, they had never even been taken out of the foam.

Kind of bummed I didn't grab these when the prices were lower. I'm using my friends HD-600 while my LCD-2s are being repaired, and I've realized I really like the Sennheiser sound.

I wanted to buy one, but they are now $499 Does anyone know if these pair well with the Schiit Lyr?
