Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

I couldn't tell you what the "best" would be because I only have a couple of amps, both solid state. But I can say that I get a very full sound with depth through my Asgard 3, much more than the magni. I've also run the 6xx on my LG V50 and it actually sounds good, surprisingly. They don't seem that hard to drive but I haven't heard them on an OTL amp.
Oh I see, what did you use your magni with?

Yeah I must say LG V/G series with their DACs do some serious lifting for being a phone. I am quite happy with my LG V20 but I would like some more oumph.

Just a thought, could I use my V20 to passthrough as a DAC and spend more money on a good amp and buy a dedicated DAC further down the line?

I cannot see myself changing out my HD6xx for any other headphone for many, many years because the sound perfectly matches my ears (I had to sell my Fidelio X2 because of the harsh treble). So I am essentially looking for "endgame" stuff for these cans, without going overboard that is.

I don't really use the magni anymore, it's a version 1...which i should have specified in the original post. It was just a minor comparison. If you're talking about the dac, which I think you are, then a modi.
Yes you can hook up your phone to an amp using 3.5mm->RCA cable. It sounds fine, I've done it.

The only thing that driven my HD650 to blistering loud volumes with clarity and authority is this one hell of an antiquated clunk from the 70s

I use a Woo Audio WA6 (from a Bluesound Node 2 as streamer, then through a RME adi-2 FS DAC, then to the WA6.)

Very nice. My vintage Kenwood KA-8006, 70wpc, int amp [1974] also drives my HD650s w/ clarity and brings out it’s full dynamics.

Anyone else who changed pads recently and found them softer and leaves less ear room? I thought that I should expect the contrary due to less clamping force as I have had them for severaI yers now. Bought the original directly from Sennheiser.

Anyone that's looking for an upgrade to the HD650 consider the Focal Elex or an Elear with Clear or Utopia pads. I've been EQ'ing my HD650 to extend deeper into the sub-bass, and to brighten up the treble, but the Elear with Utopia pads sounds very similar in frequency response, but bests the HD650 in every other way. I just got an Elear with Utopia pads a couple days ago and I'm very impressed.

70's Yamaha Natural sound receivers are very neutral, without over pronounced bass. Other vintage receivers like Sansui (with increased bass) don't usually sound as good with the 650's and the 660S's but are a great match with the 600's. I personally recommend the x20 series, IE: CR-620 and up.

Not forgetting the analog EQ Switches which opened up the trebles...
A truly Earth-shattering experience, forget spending thousands and whatnot, just get a vintage amp

would you recommend the Sansui AU-907 series?

So glad to see other audiophiles coming to realise the difference a vintage amp makes in headphone listening. I couldn’t agree more about saving an enormous amount of money when using one of these with a great headphone like the HD650. This is my Kenwood KA-8006, 70wpc, [1974]. I was with my older brother when he bought it back in 1974. When he offered to give It to me about 12 years ago I jumped on the occasion and have been using it regularly ever since. It works beautifully with my Senns HD600 series (HD600, 650 & 660S). Besides the tone adjustment switches I also use a Schiit Loki tone adjuster mainly for the sub bass. To quote James Shoegazer above, “forget spending thousands and whatnot, just get a vintage amp”. I agree 100%.

I'd recommend just about any 'big name' mid to high end receiver from the late 70's. Many of the late 60's/early 70's receivers tend to be smoother with less treble...although they are a better fit for the HD600's.

I'm not familiar with the AU-907.
