Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

Have you tried the 6xx on the thx 789 in balance output? Extremely fast, powerfull and transparent amp. $350 and nearly 1 watt into 300 ohms

No but I compared both 650 and 660 over a two week period using both balanced output on the questyle CMAtwelve. 660 came out as the winner for me it didn’t blur the details in metal and rock. Before that I owned the 650 for a long time and still one of my favourite headphones for a romantic relaxed sound. Exceptional for acoustic and jazz.

Hmm, that's a really nice amp, and powerful. I guess it just all boils down to whether you like more treble attack and bass. The 660s seem like a child of Sennheisr and Beyerdynamic.

It’s only slightly more treble than 650/6XX and about equal brightness to a 600 but none of the 600 line sound like the 58X, it’s a great value fun sounding headphone but it doesn’t come close to the others.

I'm pretty sure they use the same exact drivers between the 58x and 660, just as they do in the 650/6xx. People say the same bout the sound between the 650/6xx as well. I guess to justify paying more?
Quoting diyaudioheaven HD58X page:
"The driver is a new development and a substantially improved version of the earlier prototype (which was a bit bass shy).
It is not the same driver as used in the HD660S nor that of the HD700. Of course they are from the same ‘family’ just like the HD600 and HD650 drivers are very similar but not exactly the same."

Don't they use the exact same 150 ohm driver though?
To me the HD58X is far from the same driver as the HD660S, if anything its closer to the HD700 driver IMO, as @jimmers noted above.

My HD650 and HD6XX are slightly different sounding with HD6XX just a touch brighter and has a touch less mid bass, not easy to notice and its not due to pads since I also swapped the pads and the HD6XX was still a touch brighter and with a little less mid bass.

Agree with others that the HD660S does not seem to scale like the HD650 and HD600 which I think has a lot to do with the impedance.

Thanks for that! So its not the exact driver, but an 'improved' one. Its strange they claim that when 660 users say its got grainy treble compared. Does the grainy treble denote more thd or is there something else? THe only 150 ohm driver I know of to 'improve' on is the 660 or 700 one right?

I think they mean improved over the original development HD58X driver, not the HD660S driver.
