Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

Lol. You guys get so defensive when someone posts anything other than glowing praise of the HD650.

My comment had nothing to do with that... It seems like every couple of weeks we need to relive the same cycle of posts.

After "...Amps cannot fundamentally change how a  dynamic driver sound..." it was in anticipation of the fusillade of comments about needing the right amp for the HD-650 and, gosh, try this one!

Sorry... that was too cynical and I will stop typing now.

Not cynical. It panned out exactly as anticipated.

FWIW, yes the HD650 scales tremendously, but I doubt any amp can make someone who doesn't like what they perceive as inherent qualities do an immediate backflip.

Just a bit of drive-by trolling, pretty normal I guess.

darkster was singing a different tune on audeze-lcd-2-impressions-thread, it seems to me.

Edit: Maybe it was "lost in translation"

Don't expect the TH900 (or TH600) to lay a finger on the mids of an HD650.  They do not.  But they have lovely treble and punchy bass that goes deep...

I prefer my MDR-Z7 to either of the Fostex.  The Sony has respectable mids (still not as good the HD650) while having very punchy bass and treble that extends further then the Senn...

Well, he only asked for a dynamic that does sub bass. He never mentioned price. You could equally get the same kind of bass from a th600, or second hand Denon d2000 which might be closer in price to the HD650.

I agree that the mids aren't as forward on my th900, but it certainly doesn't sound bad. (Also my d2000)

The thing is, which headphone has deep bass, good mids and extended high's? Every headphone on Headfi shows weakness somewhere.

Anyone know one that is perfect from 20 - 20 kHz? I'd love one.

I'd love to hear a Sony z7. Heard really good things about them.

The perfect headphone?

to have sub bass, just get a headphone with a good bass boost, and EQ the mid bass down to end up with a relatively flat low end. the th900 would do that just fine.  the measurements of the headphone might improve in the process and the amp won't need more power as it would if we were to EQ up the subs on ... IDK, let's say a hd650 :).

Also, bass distortion figures don't go wild from the large boost that is necessary on an hd650.

Having said that, I have tried a Kameleon amp with eq specifically built in for the HD650. It's a totally different headphone. Goes into my list of best out there that way. Without the Kameleon, I feel that it's very good.

The higher levels of distortion that eq'ing can induce doesn't seem to harm the sound.

I didn't know that. I must admit that the he560 is in my sights at the moment although that has problems of its own as well.

I've worn headphones for working with and now I'm retired so in all those years, Ive never settled with one. I have a studio at home here, with the walls 'wallpapered' with them and not one has been perfect since somewhere around 1970 or so!!

I agree. It is hard to find a perfect headphone. I use HE500 and T90 for most of the listening and I admit I need both to be satisfied.
