Deciding too between planars, i own HD 650 what should i take, he400S or he500?
Both seem to scale alot like HD650s.

I own the HD650's and HE-500's... I have not heard the HE400S but I can say anyone that likes the HD650 will most likely be a fan of the HE-500.  You get similar tonality to the HD650 with much greater extension and a much faster bass attack.  The HE-500 is an insane value at 500 clearance price, keep in mind you will need roughly 1 full watt of power at 32ohms to get the best out of the he-500 (38 ohm).  Lyr + Phillips Miniwatt tubes ('69) + HE500 = audio nirvana.  I can say with certainty the 500 is wholeheartedly an upgrade to the 650, I have a feeling the 400S would be more of a side grade.

I haven't heard the HE400S either, but I agree I find the HE-500 an upgrade from the HD 650 at least on the system I heard them on. I'm personally planning on grabbing the Audioquest Nighthawk, will be interested in seeing how it compares to the HD 650. I've been experimenting with modding the T50RP, been having good luck lately, finally got a handle of it's annoying tizziness and I think I got the bass under control, it's becoming more like the HD 650 sonically. Power hungry monster though.

i owned the 500's at one time and have the 400s now. The he-500 is a fantastic phone for the price but I don't find they scale much at all. The 400s is more similar to the 650 in they sound more open and when amped they scale very nicely. 500's mids are fantastic but the bass is a little loose. 400s bass is well controlled. 400s is also much more comfortable than the 500.

Sorry, I was referring to the rather notorious soundstage of the 650. I honestly don't listen to classical music these days though so it's no biggie for me. I like a beat

No worries. 650 was always great for smaller-scale pieces, in jazz, acoustic, and rock.

Welcome to the club :) If you haven;t browsed all 1842 pages......you'll be rolling tubes soon lol. And yes, it's worth it all

PS don't worry if they don't have the impact the Denons have right away...these babies can take a bit to grow on you. Take your time.

I will warn you, the HD650s will need more current then you Denons currently use.  I'm just hoping you to temper your expectations unless you have an amplifier to do them justice...
