Sennheiser HD650 & Massdrop HD6XX Impressions Thread

You make a good point there. I've found that the better the reproduction quality of your equipment the more varied is the music you find acceptable. I can now put on just about anything & get a kick out of it. Stuff I'd have never dreamed of listening to previously gets a good listen.

That's got to be a good thing. Music should broaden our horizons, not limit them.

+1 Well said sir I agree music should broaden the horizons of humanity, not limit the horizons of humanity.

I will not be so bold as to say that I haven't wanted to rip the radio out of my car after turning on the Pop station and I get to hear the same 4-word chorus repeated against a drab melody, on and on and on. But like I said, those aren't the songs to judge music by.

BTW, I've had Sea Change on for about half an hour now. Haven't skipped past a single song yet, it's pretty good stuff (and that's saying a lot from me, based on my tastes)!

David, good call, and I should have clarified. While most of my listening is to Spotify Radio/cherry-picked songs from Spotify, I do use JRiver > DSD > WASAPI > Loki > headphone amp and I have about 30G of high-rez FLAC and 24/96 material to go through at work.

The Senn 650's maiden voyage, if this helps, was Brothers in Arms, 24/96, followed by Norah Jones > Come Away With Me. I have listened to both songs extensively on my home system and with my Grados and I knew right from the beginning the Senn's are good cans, and despite not being touted as "rock-centric" like the Grado line always is, I do prefer them on Rock. Rock and metal can get fatiguing quickly, especially depending on the source, so things that are less forward in some areas (up top) but still warm in the midrange give me the most satisfying experience. I still want a little more lowend but hopefully the Ember II takes care of that after it breaks in.

And I will wholeheartedly agree with you, Spotify Premium IS better than Pandora (IMO) but it cannot compete with lossless in any way shape or form. But, I only have so much space for music and my High-Rez collection is about 300G so I have to pick and choose what I take.

I built a home server with 8 TB of space for music and movies and the other 5 computers are connected to it on a wired network, using wireless only for phone and tablets.  I ripped my entire collection of CD's, 1200+ at last count, and am currently converting my vinyl (only saved about 900 albums out of 1400 that I originally had due to space issues) slow going with this task, doing only one album every two weeks, sometimes won't work on any

Do Sennheiser make any closed back headphones comparable in sound to the HD 650?

I've heard that the Beyer DT150 sounds somewhat similar to the HD 650.

Thanks.

Also I'm looking for an XLR 4 Pin adapter to use with my HD 650. I'd rather get an adapter instead of getting a full XLR cable if it's possible.

Not possible sorry.... however you can go the other way by using a SE adapter on a 4pin or dual 3pin balanced cable

Never adapt single ended to balanced.  It's usually not good for the health of your amp.  But you can adapt balanced to single ended...

Yeah, I wondered about that. I was going to comment but as soon as I clocked Sheena Easton (I'm a Scot) I decided not to bother.

Edit - Missed out Rickie Lee Jones in 1980 too.

This is by far the closest sounding closed model to the 650...imo

Yeah Matt (?), that does seem to be the general consensus eh? The only negative is that some don't like it's somewhat industrial appearance but I do.
