Sennheiser HD599 - first impressions.

Question for the HD599 owners...

I bought these because it seems they're widely regarded as one of the most comfortable headphones out there. With several hours of listening now under my belt, I find the clamping force to be much higher than expected. It's not painfully tight, but it's a far cry from the "I can wear these for hours and forget I even have them on" comments I read all over the place.

Thoughts? Anyone else notice this? Maybe Sennheiser changed the design recently?

When I find the Monolith M1570 to be more comfortable and effortless than the HD599 it's time to start asking questions.

These are some of the most comfortable headphones I have, but I'we owned them for almost 7 years now.
If you find the clamping too tight, you might leave them clamped on a box overnight, or you can find also other methods for easing the clamping on headphones online.

I left them standing o a headphone stand like the shape of the head for a while and I did not have any issues after.
I did not have big issues from the start, but everyones head shape is different, so yeah.

If it is what you expect, decent quality, post some pictures in this thread, maybe it’ll help someone in the future.
So far so good. The fit and finish look good, and in terms of audio performance I'm finding a more detailed soundstage and just overall more presence and impact from the music.

After a bit more time between the cans, I will unequivocally state that for anyone with a balanced amp, a balanced cable is a no-brainer upgrade for the 599s.

A more detailed, more interesting presentation while retaining the "fun" characteristics inherent in the model.

I got mine from Amazon, a NewFantasia balanced cable. If your source is optimised for balanced, it'll sound great.
I bought a couple of these cables for Momentums. They seem pretty high quality. Connectors are nice and there's some extra insulation on the jacket. But they're not too stiff and tangly.

And I like running my 599 single ended with tubes involved, so the balanced cable is going to a HD 559 to run off an SMSL SAP-11.
Gonna crank my nastiest dirt-metal through it :metal:

The 599 balanced is fantastic though.

Yooooo, I just ordered some HD599SE from Sennheiser Outlet store for £59.

Think they are a steal at that price??

Most definitely. You get a good amount of the magic that is Sennheiser, for peanuts. They teased me into moving up though, and are mostly relegated to morning coffee duty. A great bargain.

Thanks, I appreciate the reply!

I got them today and so far only have tried them with the stock 3.5mm cable which is terrible and rubbery but I have some balanced cables arriving on Thursday... hopefully!

Looking at the rtings graphs. The 599 has more bass and low-midrange than the hd6xx (hd 650). Less 1khz to 3khz energy and generally a bit more treble with a peak at 9khz. This makes me think the 599 will sound a lot thicker in the bass and low- midrange.maybe a bit brighter in the treble.
Anyone own both hd599 and hd6xx (hd650) that can tell me the difference in sound between the two?

I can't make a comparison, but I can confirm that it has a bit of that chunk. Very pleasing in an open-back.

I have the 599 and 660S (not the 650), and can confirm that the 599 feels like it has less detail and resolution, a less assertive midrange presentation, and a more fun/warm/prosumer tuning. It's a very comfortable and undemanding headphone, and it also sounds great on tubes.
