i have both E17 and HD598. i say this with experience. e17 is not a bad DAC/AMP combo, especially if you consider it's portable factor. HOWEVER!.... e17 is pretty shy on the bass side. so if you're already have a bass shy cann the E17 will only make it even more shy. in comparison, you'll have to bump the bass setting up by +4 or +6 to equate itself to other amps. if you don't mind bumping the bass then it's fine. but i personally don't like eq. imo equipments should sound its best out of the box, one shouldn't have to eq it for it to sound better.
if you have a pair of canns that's particularly bright and cold, the treble feature is also nice, it allows you to tame it down.
the e17 is good for certain headphone, and certain situations. i choose to use it for my ATH AD700, which is naturally weak on the mid and shy on bass. the e17 is very strong on mid, and brings a bit more depth to the soundstage. the AD700 has lots of width, but lacks width. i am using +6 to bass on the e17 with my AD700, and +2 on the mid to bring out more mid on the AD700. it's now a perfect combination for my official Office setup combo.
i personally don't think e17 goes well with HD598. 598 is very strong on the mid, the e17 just makes it even brighter.
one thing you need to know about e17 is its bass, although it's more shy, but it's tighter. you'll notice once you bump it up. that can be good OR bad depends on your taste, and the type of music you listen to. the e17 is by far the tightest and quickest bass i've personally experienced. i don't dislike it and i don't hate it, but some might.
based on my setup and experience, i think the e17 goes better with my AD700 than it does with 598. i choose to use my 598 with my Xonar Essence STX, which is a godsend. the Burr-Brown ship, Ti amp and JRC op-amp really brings out the three deimensional feel and doubled the soundstage. the soundstage in this setup is ENORMOUSE. the bass isn't too tight, it's just right with the right amount of roll-off.
one thing you should know about HD598 is that although it's official published spec is 50ohms. in reality, it's got a funky impedance graph. it actually fluctuates from 64~250. so whatever setup you get, definitely choose the higher amp setting. i am using the +12db (64~300ohm) setting on my Xonar and it really brings out the dynamic range of the phone.
