Sennheiser hd-650 or Hifiman he-400
Aug 3, 2012 at 9:27 PM Post #76 of 124
Having owned every dynamic and planar, I'd go with the HD650. It is the more versatile headphone with the bigger soundstage. Also, it scales well with gear upgrades.
The HE-400 is the weakest out of the HE-500 and HE-6. It does certain genres of music well, but fails to deliver overall. Both headphones are great performers and great values.
You'd be far better off with the HE-500 or a modified Fostex T50RP. But if not, pick the 650 and enjoy.

Everyone in the HE-400 owners thread would beg to differ. Lots of em own or have owned HE-500s too, amongst other headphones (like modded T50RPs / HD650s).

then everyone should interject their opinion. lol
But really...that's cool, I am offering my opinion. The HE-400 is nice, but's it's a lesser headphone, IMO. haha

It does all genres well but fails to deliver? Contradiction ahoy.

Also, was it the revised HE400, and with velour pads? That makes a huge difference, from the original, Fwih.

HD650 does have a lot of key shortcomings compared to HE-400, but everybody has their own tastes in sound.  HD650 is extremely clean sounding, which is nice, and its treble is still a good bit sparkly and airy, contrary to what people say.  I'd definitely take HE-400 over HD650 any day.

Seriously, are you trying to nit-pick my comments? Also, don't misquote me, you're being misleading and annoying.

I've heard both, older and newer HE-400's. I've also recently heard them with velours, so to answer your question, yes.

Sorry I misread. In any case, you're the only person I've seen who has not been wowed by the HE400, let alone says you'd be far better off with an HE500, which to those I've read who own both say it's not a huge difference, let alone $300 worth of a difference. I for one wouldn't want less bass than the HE400, which is exactly the problem with the HE500, so NO, not everyone would be FAR BETTER off with the HE500.

But in any case, I guess we're all fanboys of certain headphones.

Then there's someone on the HE400 thread who owns both and say they're both worthy for different reasons. That alone makes it sound like they aren't comparable, and cater to different things. That's when I REALLY dislike comparisons.... when they don't compare to one another in what they excel at.

I was wowed at an audition with the HE-6 and Liquid fire (it was my favorite out of all the headphones I've listened to)

:frowning2:

I've been lurking this thread to learn more about the HE-400, I was actually thinking about getting the HE-500 on day in the future with the Lyr,

But I might just save up and get the Asgard with the HE-400.

To be honest, I actually have more fun with the HD650 than the DT880s. I guess I have a closet basshead inside of me :D

Raven, can you tell me if the HD650 has smoother highers than the HE400 w/pleather?

Because if it does, there's no way in hell I'd like the HD650. The HE400 with pleather was already slightly muffled sounding. It took the velour to transform them into what I love today.

I don't have the HD650 anymore.  I borrowed it from my local hifi shop to audition for a while.  I know for a fact though that HD650 is overall a brighter sounding headphone than the HE-400 in general, except maybe when the songs have lots of information in the highest of treble.  I came off the D2000 and DT990 before, and I never found the treble of the HD650 lacking.

Yea, that's fine. It's not that I'm not wowed by the HE-400, I just personally own headphones that are better. Now when I said he'd be far better of with an HE-500, I ment it.
I guess we just have different thoughts when it comes to value. I'd at least listen to the HE-500 first before you write it off. And again I never said everyone would be FAR BETTER off with the HE-500. My comments were to the OP, but thanks.

All any of us can do is offer our experiences and our opinions, I did just that. I'd urge you to listen to the gear instead of regurgitating what you've heard on Head-Fi.

I don't like to post much on boards much but are you seriously saying the HE-400 is really that good ?

I have never been so impressed by any headphone, including the D7000, Pro 2900, Pro 900, Q701, DT880, 990, HE-4, ESW9, Pro 2900, among so many others. The newer HE400 with velours comes so close to perfection, that I don't find it missing pretty much ANYTHING. It's enjoyable with everything, and I can't find any actual faults in it's sound quality. With all the other headphones, there was always one or two things I had nitpicks with. Not so with the HE400.
