Sennheiser HD 598 Impressions Thread

I got mine in today.

....let's just say for now that they're a considerable sonic upgrade from the Audio-Technica ES7 (which I've been slumming it with for a few weeks now)—and they sound pretty dang good too! I'm sort of surprised by how good they sound, could be a great long-term stopgap until I can re-build a proper high-end headphone system back up in a couple years.

$150 is a crazy good deal for these cans!

I got it at that price as well.
I think it's good but I don't really have a lot of experience.
Every decent headphone I have are Sennheiser. (HD 598, Momentum, PXC 250 II)

I was originally looking at AKG K550s and Bayerdynamic DT 880 before going with HD 598.

There's a discussion elsewhere on the merits of the beyerdynamic 990 pros vs 598s. Both the same price right now!

Yeah I just went with HD598 because I don't have any DAC/AMP right now.
All I have is Xonar DG on my computer.

I will look into Beyerdynamic/AKG/Audio Technica once I get some better supporting equipment.

I love my HD598s. After owning the ATH-M50, the comfort was incredible. I personally didn't like the M50s comfort. Felt like my ears were getting squished. And the sound was not even comparable. M50s bass was too emphasized and after a while I started to realize that the hype about them was nothing special. The 598s just have a much more natural sound to them.

I'm new and not really good with audio terminology, so I'm not really good at exactly saying why I like them. I just think they sound really really good. Lol

Argh, that faux leather headpad is killing me. Can't find velours headpads from hd518/hd558 anywhere...

You could try contacting Sennheiser directly.  I'm considering replacing my headpad with a velour one of a 558, and get a new set of earpads as well.  Colors gonna clash, but I can't find the 598 pads anywhere on amazon.

I believe they are stuck on by some sort of glue or double sided tape. I know that the valour headcushion is attached to a piece of plastic like the earpad which is then glued onto the headband. So if the part is available i believe it should be possible to replace it.

Also new earpads can drastically change the sound. Soft earpads would sound very warm and more boomy, new ones would be more textured and brighter. (kind of like the HD650 vs HD700 kind of sound characteristics)
