That is true, EQ is definitely a viable option as the HD 598's I've found are very respondent to amping, especially when compared to other headphones. However, to a certain extent that has a limit- that is a clear sign that I've probably chosen the wrong phone, but honestly that's the only thing I have a problem with the HD 598's.
 
I've listened to all the phones in this price range at some point, I didn't especially like the Beyers, the AKG just too analytic and difficult to amp, etc, etc... I have tried the HD 558's personally and though they sound good, the bass from my ears can bleed a bit and after hearing the 598's, I couldn't justify getting them for the lack of soundstage and smooth mids compared to the 598's. (559's? I assume you mean 595's, in which case I'll try to listen to later.)
 
Should I instead get the X1? I've heard they are very good and better than all the current HD's under the 600's. Perhaps I should get a more expensive headphone? But then again, I can't afford it at the moment. I'll probably keep the 598's though until I have the money for a more expensive 598-like phone with a bit of bass improvement and an amp for it.

Regard the DragonFly, keep in mind that they have more than one version.  Apparently, they improved on version 1.0 and now they have 1.2 I think.

For full disclosure, I have version 1.0 of the Dragonfly.  I bought them for approximately $100 on amazon.com in December. I think that I have seen version 1.2 on the latest Audio Advisor catalog for about $150.

I saw a comparison on Head-Fi (http://www.head-fi.org/t/701027/amazing-audioengine-d3) between the AudioEngine D3 and the Dragonfly 1 and the reviewer thought the D3 gave his/her phones more body and bass.
 
I've also read online that some think it is better than the Dragonfly 1.2; that the Dragonfly has some harsh sibilance but has a clearer, more extended sound and the D3 lacking somewhat in depth but more than makes up for it in width and musicality.
 
Again, this is all based off on reviews since that's all I have to go on since I can't personally test them out.

IMO the RS220 sound darker, slower and more laid back vs the HD598. More airy than the HD598 as well. but that is based on memory

Just paired my HD598s with an amp for the first time, definitely a noticeable added oomph to it. Wish I could articulate things a bit better, but still in love with these headphones after 2-years, just feels like music is filling the room.

Today was a rare snow day in the midlands of South Carolina, and while working at home, I decided to listen to some music via headphones.  The music was the Living Stereo CD (and hybrid SACD, but I played the CD layer; RCA Red Seal BMG Classics 82876-61391-2 RE1) of two concerti for Violin and Orchestra, with Jascha Haifetz on the violin and Charles Munch conducting the Boston Symphony Orchestra: Beethoven's Op.61 and Mendelsshohn's Op.64.  I played the CD on a Fujitsu TH700 Tablet PC through the Dragonfly v1.0. I used five headphones: the Sennheiser HD598 (of course), the Beyerdynamic DT250-250, the Audio-Technica AD700, the Ortofon O-one, and the Fostex T50RP.  First of all, the music was enjoyable using any of the headphones.  Other observations.  The HD598, the AD700, and the DT250 sound similar; the O-one and the T50RP are very different from the other three: the T50RP is very dark; the O-one has less detail retrieval and a diffuse soundstage (which, in my review of this headphone, I claimed makes it sound like you are at a concert hall for symphonic music). The DT250 has the most detail retrieval of all.  The AD 700 is the most efficient.  If I had to keep two of the five, they would be the DT250 and the HD598.  If I had to keep one, it would be the DT250-250.
 
There are worse ways to spend a couple of hours on a snow day...

I have that disc as well. Actually, I have almost all of the Living Stereo SACD's. They are wonderful recordings of exceptional performances and, at less than $10 a pop for most of them, an incredible bargain.

I dont enjoy orchestral music as much with headphones though. The 3-channel SACDs played through my home theater are just spectacular.

What genre of music do you listen to and do you have any preference? What source are you using?

IMO, the Philips X1 sound way more warmer and darker than the HD598. I prefer the HD598 better for long listening but not sure about the K612 though

Thanks i  listen rock,metal and punk, but i'll use the headphone also for games (10%) and films (40%).
I have an asus xonar u7, but i have at least half of my music library made of mp3 320kps
