which would be best suited for my genres. I'm not too much of an analyst..and will be driving straight out of portable.

i guess that would be the HD558,
the HD598 would be even better though since it is more refined and your genres don't need that much bass

And you would save for the HD600 over the HD598 and so forth.  Just get the 558 if it's in the price range you want.  It's a good bargain and you can always spend more on expensive headphones later if you decide you like the hobby.

well i'm definitely getting a HD650 or something like that in the distant future, its just that i had enough for the HD598 just about 2 weeks after i got the HD558. so it was just due to my impatience that i missed out on the HD598

i suffered from what you suffered ..but now I'm smart in the second chance
I don't know much but the 'what hifi' doesn't say good things about the 598

I have enough money to buy an HD 800 if I would so wish, I also listened to the HD 700 for a small while today but I'm not going to invest thousands in audio equipment to get the best sound available.

I'm getting the HD 558 (normal price 150€) for 130€, the HD 598 costs 185€, a 55€ difference which I'm not sure if I should use the money for something else instead.

I believe the HD 558's are good headphones to use for anything, I can go and compare them to a bunch of grados (SR-80/60 & a custom SR-80) and the HD 700 at "the" local audio store which also has a DT990 to listen to.

I think my next audio purchase will be some good 2.1 speaker system like the Logitech Z623. (After I bother to clear some desk space for them!)

The headphones will be mostly used for night long strategy gaming and delicate music like solo piano and classical.

"With a subwoofer this size, the Z623 excels at bass-heavy content such as video games and action movies."

Maybe my next headphones will be a more considerable investment and a much more informed choice, but only after my experiences with the HD 558 and the rest.

Just get the hd 598s.  You'll only regret buying the 558s knowing that you only got the mid tier hd 5x8 headphone.  I owned the 558 for a couple weeks and returned those and just paid a bit extra and got the 598s.  The 598s have a tad less bass, but everything else is better in sound quality.  They are also built slightly differently.  The 558 clamps tighter and the headband does not have the 598s headband leathery cover (some imitation leather).  The headband is also constructed differently to give it a slightly looser clamp.

Completely agree with the above post. Don't do the same mistake as me.

I would want to settle for these and save some money because I got a good deal for them.
Brick&Mortar Retail stores sell the HD558 for more than 170€, Online retailers sell it for 150€ and I got a 130€ special!

The 598's are 1.42x the price so are you saying they're worth my money compared to the sound of the HD558?
Am I getting 70% of the sound of the HD598's for 70% of the price, is that fair enough?

I'm not an audio fanatic but I may come back with more serious intentions on getting a GREAT audio setup in the future.
For now I want to balance my budgets to spend on things because I don't have a fixed income.

Who would you guys be suggesting the HD558 for?

well the HD558 has better value, the HD598 has better absolute performance. really depends on your budget, if you want the best you can, get the HD598, unless you plan to upgrade again in a while. so for the moment i just suggest get the HD598, hurts the wallet more, but you should be happy for a long time after that.
