just wanted to share since i got them a few days ago
there is some serious sq in these babies
the bass is tighter, more controlled, and more punchy than mtpg and ddm due to the bass tips included
mids are neither neutral nor forward. just right
treble is very clear and approching dba-02's clarity
you can also change the tips if you want more treble and a balanced sound
the soundstage is wide and airy. much wider than mtpg and about on par with ddm
design and build quality is top notch
these should be included in the top tier
sad to know these aren't noticed here on headfi

Thanks for the impressions 2rooi123.  I was wondering if you could elaborate a bit more on the different tips.  I've noticed that the CX980 seems to come with two sets of tips, one set of white-cored Sony hybrid clones, and another similar set with pinkish cores.  Is there any difference to the sets besides the firmness of the core, i.e. does one set of tips sit further away or closer to the base of the stem?  That may be the way Sennheiser's tip-based tuning works.

Also noticed that the diaphragm guards appear to just be pieces of foam.  Seems a bit cheap, but at least that will make the CX980 more mod-able as one could experiment with different types of foam.

Anyway, looking forward to further impressions!

I haven't really analyzed the tips but as far as i know the pink cores gives more bass punch while the white gives somewhat a more balanced and natural sound. and the tips has a higher quality compared to hybrids
