Hi

I now have a pair of senn 555's that i like. Will the AH-D1100 be an upgrade, sidegrade or downgrade to these? They will without a doubt be better for portable use with the shorter chord and smaller plug but sound is what really matters. Im also guessing that the denon will have better bass but will it also be an overall improvement?

I had actually ordered the AH-A100 but with a baby on the way i decided to spend abit less on phones.

Thx :)

Talking to myself here lol but I just ordered the E7 today and should have it in a week or two. Now about that Denon 1100... anyone compare it with the sennheiser 555?

Still talking to myself lol.

1100s are in house and initial impressions are on a scale from 1-10... about a 3. All these cans have so far is alot of bass and nothing else. Hope this changes over the next few days of use or they will go back. Really lousy phones so far for me who is used to open cans with sound quality.

The D1100 aren't lousy phones, it's just our taste is different and why headphones regardless of price can sound very different. I absolutely hate Sennheiser sound especially HD555/595 myself and would pick the D1100 any day over it. It's clear that you don't like warm/smoother sound so you should in future pick laid-back headphones with less bass and stay to Sennheiser or BeyerDynamic for example. HD555 are definitely clearer sounding but clearer sound doesn't have to mean better quality IMO.

Have you even EQd the headphones? I expect less than 10% to sound according to my taste without EQing. D1100 especially benefits from a bit decrease in upper bass (125 - 250Hz) and increase in treble range (4 - 16kHz)

these two headphones are worlds apart. they will sound nothing alike. if you want an upgrade from the 555 but with a familiar sound you may want the HD600 or 650. maybe even the new 598.

Thx :)

Well yes you are right they are made for different tastes. After getting abit more used to their signature im upping them to 6/10 and realise that i prolly must change phones depending on what kind of music i want to hear. They are in my ears very good for techno, house, hiphop and disco.

Another thing i have noticed is that it can sometimes feel as if these closed cans develope a vacume inside when they play bassy music. A feeling i dont have with open cans. Is that just my wierd head  or has anyone else noticed it.

I personally would take the HD-555 any day. If you like any sort of balanced sound signature, don't get the D1100. I had them a few days ago and found them extremely bass heavy. More so than the M50 and D2000. Probably not as bass heavy as the 750DJ, but I'm not sure. Even a bass reducing EQ didn't seem to do much. They were the first headphone I ever had that made me curse with disgust at how much I disliked them!

Not that you asked, but I would however take the D2000 over the D1100! It's so much better and not much more.

bass on the 1100's is ridiculous unless you make a concerted effort to reduce it through EQ.

they're not acceptable without a lot of EQ work. I wouldn't unless you're willing to do that.  I can't speak for the HD-555's as I've not heard them.

They are bass (mud) heavy for sure and not at all accurate in their reproduction of music they way its supposed to sound. I will keep them for use outdoors but I am suprised that phones at this price level can be this poor. Im very glad i didnt shell out for the A100's if they have the same sound signature.

Think ill go for the K701's next or maybe the sennheiser 650's

IMO phones should not color the sound to this extreme level but reproduce the sound the artist intended.

I would imagine the hd555 to be totally different from the d1100
