Senn 555 vs. Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro-80
Dec 15, 2007 at 11:16 PM Post #16 of 34
^ Ok, I think that it sounds like the DT770 pro 80s are better for me than the A900s

Are there any others in the $150-$200 range that I should look at?

According to comments made by dealers who sell both, the HD555 and H595 are nothing at all like each other.

Hey there

I own a pair of the HD555s, and I have to say that I was pretty underwhelmed with them. I still am, mostly, but that may be because my main phones are the HD580s. They're pretty good for their price range, but if you're willing to spend more, I'd get better headphones.

I'm pretty sure HD555's don't offer anymore isolation than the Grado's, so if isolation is a priority, you might try some IEM's(in ear monitors, I own the ER6i). What environment are you hoping to use your headphones in?

What do you know, a post suited to the two cans i own.

Comfort - I would say they are about the same, just depends on what you like. The 555s are light (plastic), and almost unnoticeable on your head. The DT 770s are slightly heavier, with a metal (for the most part) head band, covered in leather. You can definitely notice them on your head, but its a nice, isolated feel.

isolation - both are opposite ends of the spectrum, 555 offering none (they can get pretty loud at max volume if you listen to them off your head), and the beyers with closed backs offering good isolation (very little leakage).

Sound quality worth the difference? - I have the -80 ohm versions of the beyers, without an amp. Unamped there isn't a huge, HOLY **** THESE BLOW THE 555s AWAY, difference. The senns are great with acoustic guitar and vocals (probably its greatest strength), which may be good for your classic rock. While I like the sound of the beyers overall more, unamped they don't sound above and beyond better.

Obviously with an amp, I'm sure there is great improvement, based off what I have read anyway.

I'm still somewhat of a distant headfier, so i haven't dipped into the high-high end. So my opinion is based purely on direct comparisons of both these headphones as they are the only headfi quality cans I've owned.

I have an amp on the way already, so I think I`ll be able to experience the cans at their full after an appropriate burn-in time, and that if I was to get a set of dt770`s, they would definately be the 80 ohm version so that I could still listen happily unamped if need be.

The environment that I would be using them in would generally be one at home, but they should probably isolate at least a little bit so that they don`t bother my room mates. I would also be using them for travel, and some public use. the more I think about it, the more I come to realise that I do need some form of isolation, if only to keep the people around me happy. As to IEM`s, I have recently bought myself a pair of Senn CX300`s for $25 (and yes, they are real), and I have always enjoyed fullsized cans, so I think that thats what I`m in the market for.

Bass is not the be all end all for me in headphones, but bass is an important factor, and I really don`t want to have cans that have good highs and mids, but disappointing bass. I think that I have decided to start focusing more an a closed can, but I`m not quite sure which to go for quite yet.

So, to wrap things up, I have finally bought the Dt770 Pro-80's, and am waiting for them to arrive.

Thanks for everyone who gave me the advice I needed to make an informed decision.

Considering what many head-fi'ers think, and that the HD-555 and HD-595 have at least the same enclosure and very similar, if not the same, drivers, they are actually very similar.

If you were trying to sell two similar pairs of headphones with almost $100 in price, which one would you rather the customer buy? I think you'd want to make the difference between the two as large as possible. Headroom and other similar sites are not where you want to get all your information, as they want you to buy more, not learn more.

Cyberidd, congratulations! I hope to hear your impressions when you get them

If, in your music tastes, you hadn't mentioned classical and bluegrass I'd say go for the Beyers.
However, I'm a tad boggled by the comment the 555s and the 770s aren't in the same league as I'd give up my 770s (not the Darths!) long before I'd give up the 555s
The 555s are by far the best under $150 phones I know for acoustic music or if you're looking for a natural, unmolested, reproduction of your source.
I find that people who don't like the sound of the 555s tend to also not like the sound of my uber-high end speakers either.
It's all personal taste.
I concur that the the ATH-A900 might be a nice middle ground - as long as you don't need to go outside with them.
You'll look a bit like a Martian! =D

Nothing personal espire but I feel obliged to state that this comment is the biggest load of crap I've seen here; a forum plagued with trailerloads of crap.

I think if you'd actually done business with, or consulted with Jorge and the fine folks at headroom you'd know your statement is 180 degrees out of wack.

I have a pair of the 770/80's and for R&B, Jazz, and anything with a need for some bottom the 770 is your best bet. I have not tried the 555 but I have tried the 650's with my Hornet and I still prefer my 770 to the 650's. I am looking to try a pair of 880's to see if they are worth changing from my 770s. But, for now they are great for music with soul at the bottom...
