I got my hands on "Analogue Bubblebath 3" by AFX, not bad stuff.

I picked up "In a Beautiful Place out in the Country" by Boards of Canada today, we'll see if I like it. For $6 it was worth a try

Picked up some more "Boards of Canada" and it's really growing on me. Also have new Orbital CD Octane.

For Boards of Canada fans:

They were one of the first "IDM" groups I heard and they blew my mind. However, I find that I dont listen to them nearly as much as a lot of the other stuff I've since aquired in that particular vein (emotional, generally happy, complex, unusual electronic). So here are some of my recs for those who like BoC:

B Fleischmann: particularly the Welcome Tourist 2 CD album
Freescha: absolutely brilliant
Casino vs Japan: first cd is too ambient for me, but others are great
Mouse on Mars has been mentioned, but I think Glam and Iaora Tahiti (sp?) are his best albums.

and perhaps most of all:
Christ: Metamorphic Reproduction Miracle - for a while I thought this WAS boards of canada- actually its just a guy who has a writing credit on one of their EPs.

and for the original poster- TONS of current electronica artists were inspired by SAW 85-92 - You see it mentioned on Allmusic.com in many album reviews. I was looking for it for a long time because of that, and though I own and like all of Aphex Twin's albums, it definately sounds like a precursor to almost everything else I listen to regularly now. Black Dog Productions - Bytes is another of these.

"Bytes" is, unfortunately, a terrible, terrible recording. After getting my Stax setup and my uber-revealing Nitrogen cables, I could barely listen to it. I actually bought a second pair of Bolder M80 cables just to use for... well.. Bytes (and other poorly-recorded albums, I suppose).

IMO, however, "Spanners" beats "Bytes" any day.

I've been looking for Spanners for about the same time I've been looking for Bytes (which I finally got on ebay). Glad to hear that I dont have all the best of the black dog/balil/plaid yet

Yeah, but it doesn't do much good for Americans, unfortunately - the American dollar is weaker than a wet paper bag. Their newer sale items run up at about $17 USD, with the cheapest being about $9.50 for the 5-pound albums.

I just preordered Ultravisitor (for that 3" CD) and snagged a copy of Artificial Intelligence I and a Japanese import Peel Session (with Autechre, BOC, and Black Dog all on one disc - that + AI1 were on sale for six pounds each). Total was about $50 after shipping... yikes! Oh well.

All true. I'll be waiting till the end of the sale hoping the dollar goes up a bit (my income is US). Not likely, but at least the folks in the UK can get some good deals.

Damn, I can't believe nobody has mentioned Four Tet yet. I love Four Tet - Rounds more than any aphex or boards of canada album, and I own SAW 85-92 and the Richard D James album. But Four Tet - Rounds I got on vinyl

But I'm not huge into electronic music, though I am very familiar with it.

So check it out. Also, for all of you listening to artists on a song by song basis, shame on you! You must do it by album to get at least a taste of what they're all about.

Four Tet is excellent.

Although I like U.F.Orb and the rest of the Orb's catalog, am I the only one to say that Orbvs Terrarvm was their most mature, complex and beautiful work? This is neo-classical music my friends. Absolutely in-CREDIBLE, considering that the music makes you feel like you are flying swimming at the same time - and of course, the playful Patterson had to name it the Latin equivalent of "Earth".

Now, don't judge me this early on, but I **cringe**gasp** downloaded a few aphex twin songs. Not much out there really.

But after listening to Milkman and one called Outside(kick ass violin), I'm hooked. I never gave techno much thought before as I felt it never tried giving me much thought. But this is much different! The beats are incredible, and you can tell there's musicianship within the whole song. I just kept smiling larger and larger as I listened. I haven't felt like that since I first heard something like Radiohead-Paranoid Andriod, Miles Davis-Autumn Leaves, or Primus-My Name is Mud. All of these songs started an affair(ask my friends, girlfriend) with there groups/genres.

It's kind of sad, because I've seen Aphex mentioned quite a few times before but I never took a listen. So thank you. I'm going to have to pay more attention to this section of the fourm, and I hope to find more good music.

Kickass violin solo != aphex!!! I don't remember who it is but that is NOT aphex twin.
