Schiit Ragnarok Amplifier

Thanks for the suggestions.

It doesn't buzz when it's not powered on, whether or not it's isolated from other electrical equipment.

Unplugging cables makes no difference.

I did try plugging it in to yet another power outlet in my apartment last night which was not connected to or near any other electrical equipment and the buzz did seem to reduce a bit. So maybe I do need to try to access an isolation transformer or power conditioner or UPS. Unfortunately isolation transformers seem to be very expensive here in Aus - I might have to try to borrow one and see if it makes a difference.

You can probably rent an isolation transformer for a few days from a place that hires out power tools.

Amp finally arrived. Only done some initial listening since I have been sick. But boy does the amp have headroom/power. You really need to be careful. You ears and headphones will run out of headroom first. Still waiting for my balanced interconnects to arrive so I can connect the Rag to my main system driving the Apogee Stages. Should happen by this weekend. Here is a pic of my little setup on my nightstand for now.

Hows the temperature/heat from the amp with continued usage? Don't want a fireplace right beside me LOL

It will heat the house about the same as a 75W light bulb. Let's not be dramatic.

That said, yes, we turn ours off. Though I think there's one that's been running in Mike's office for about 8 months now.

perhaps not the house but next to my bed on the table the heat was noticeable and had to be turned off when not in use

The Rok gets hot and you can feel it if very near i.e. right next to it. But nothing to worry about if say you are a foot away IME. My tube amp gets even hotter.

The only reason not to place Rag atop Ygg would be insufficient airspace above the amp. If, say, there was a shelf right above. Based on experience, I recommend about four inches. Keep in mind that air coming from the cooling grate will be about 125ºF (by my measurement) and the unit surfaces approx. 100ºF. Not exactly a hellish inferno, even pleasing on a crisp fall evening.

Had the amp for about a week. How long did anyone find it takes to burn in?

According to the website, Rag is burned in for 100 hours before final testing and shipping. So you probably shouldn't expect significant changes in the sound signature. Mine may have gotten a little better in the bass over time. (Or I could be deluding myself.)

I just place some aluminum foil on top and let my daughter use it as an easy bake grille. Quesadillas anyone?;)
