Many thanks to @Senex49 for a WE 396A. I receive an occasional gift and this one is amazing!
Listening to Bill Evans’ Empathy. I will do a tube comparison once each tube gets some play time. Fun stuff, tubes and music on a rainy day.🤪IMG_7889.jpeg

Ok Getz Girl from Ipanema is incredible first listen! Soundstage is remarkable.

You mean The Girl from Ipanema by Stan Getz, right?

yes sorry, is there another Getz who did a version of Girl from Ipanema? It is one of my go to songs for a quick listen. Now I am onto One Fine Day performed by Chris Rea. It helps me get a sense of the tubes balance. Listening through a WiiM, Qobuz, and Focal Utopias. For a $150 amp it is quite engaging with my current setup. I do want to see how the tubes I have rate in a blind test, maximum score of 100 under the system I like to use.

Got three Westinhouse 12AU7's today, ebay untested...so its a crap shoot, but the price was decent.
1 test very good and matched well.
2 is medium strength. matched well.
3 is on the low end of life cycle...

1. Sounds very good.
3. Sounds crappy.
2. Is decent..

Amazing on how these track to the testing with a tube tester..
Alex

Have 4 never been used Westinghouse arriving later today. Will see how that lot tests and sounds.

They don't make desks like that anymore. Is it a family heirloom, Bill?
Yes, it was my great-grandfathers, made back at the turn of the century (meaning the last century, not this one ). It was passed along to my grandfather where it sat unloved in his garage for probably 30 years. When my dad got it, all the shellac or varnish or whatever they'd used back then had turned very dark (almost black) and was bubbled up in many areas. My dad took to down to the individual boards and refinished it. It will go to my son at some point. Although he shows little interest in it now, I'm betting that will change as he gets older.

Gilberto, sorry I have multiple things going on right now.

Actually I am not sure if two versions are the same or not, both are wonderful indeed.

Your dad did a fine job with it ... looks original. I'm sure your son will see value in it, one day. The importance of various things changes with time.

I am on my tenth sample song and I find no weaknesses so far. I can see why they are held in high regard.

You can get a Bendix 2C51 from Dale Rogalski at : https://vacuumtubes.net/
for $25 + shipping.
Mine is a United Electron Brand.

According to Dale:
United Electron was a re-brander and did not make their own tubes. We can tell by the construction that they were made by Bendix and sold to United. It was very common for tube companies to make tubes for other companies. RCA, Sylvania and GE all made tubes for each other and re-branders bought from all of the different tube manufacturers. It was cheaper for companies to contract with another company that was currently producing a tube than to shut down a production line and re-tool.
