I started working with tube gear as a teen, then later during college friends and I would mess around with mostly Dynaco tube gear, RCA still used some tubes when I hired in there but my work was in solid state. Eventually I bought several solid state amps but none were as appealing as some of the modified Dynaco's I was used to so I eventually made my way back. A master chess player from Latvia whom I competed against regularly would turn on his Dynaco ST 70 with Klipsch*** speakers as we played and suddenly I was hooked on the sound again but tube gear was less readily available so I had to wait.
As a Sun Ra fan you should be used to discordant sounds, distortion, noise, and random chaos so I would assume you'd appreciate any similar things you might hear from your equipment. Or perhaps if you expect the Arkestra in everything, you hear the Arkestra in everything even if it is not there?
I'm fortunate enough to have hoarded purchased 4 pairs (2x early 50s sideways labeling and 2x later horizontal labeling) of the WE 396As and 2 pair of the JW military variant a few years ago before the prices went totally nuts.
The 396As are spectacular! If you have the need, opportunity, and funds - BUY THEM!

I've grown to love the clicks of my Freya N. It's such a cool tactile mechanical sensation. Granted, it's on a shelf some distance from me. If it was sat on a desk almost at my elbow, maybe I'd think differently.
Agreed. It only took about 5 minutes for me to get used to the clicking relays in my first piece of Schiit, the Saga S.
I've since up-graded to the Freya S and now have the most excellent Kara.

As far as so know the Heritage line is still built in Hope Arkansas.
Keep in mind that the regular GE, RCA, Sylvania were also made to the same very tight tolerances. Don’t be afraid of those either. Oddly, the 6N3P that arrived with my 2++ is one of my best sounding tubes. Every once in a while, you get one that surprises you!

This is the one that I started with and it remains the one record that has ever changed the way I listen to/hear music. Wasn't easy though. Took me a minute(weeks) to quit trying to "process" the music like I do with everything else and just take the ride. Over 80 albums in and they only really lost me one time. One one track they actually tried to play a creaking door. It went on for like 20 minutes. I'm sure it's used for torture at Gitmo.
