Listening to Blues Image 'Ride Captain Ride' and recalling how at 10 years old I would go to sleep with an AM radio under my pillow waiting to hear it and other hits of the time. When your fondest memories of youth center around music, that's when you know you've been a music lover / audiophile in the making for as long as you can remember. 😍

Music has been an important part of my life for as long as I can remember and will will be until I shed this mortal coil. Thanks to Schiit and you fine folks for sharing and helping me rekindle this passion.
Mike Pinera!

A couple of great examples of psychoacoustic effects can be found on
1, Immaculate Collection, Madonna - Express Yourself & Vogue are two standouts with wide, side and rear placement all from two speakers.
2. Deep Forest - Hunting.... Starting at 2:04 especially, the vocals track right around you. Again only two speakers.

Sit in the sweet spot, and you'll hear it.

*My system, my views and as always YMMV
Mmm, Deep Forest 😍

Did take the time to run the fire pump for a little while, and top off the gardening and fire-water tanks.
Then staying inside, mostly, hydrating with some cooling malted beverages.
I had a strange compulsion despite the dire heat warnings to drag myself across town to the Newport heritage rail workshops open day. It was surprisingly crowded in dusty rail yards and there was a live band...

Recordings are mixed to create psychoacoustic effects such as instrument placement, stereo separation. reverb and delay, and many other electronic mixing techniques that will make one recording sound different from another. Users often interpret this as "sound stage." But it is a perception of acoustic phenomenon, and will change depending on things like speaker placement, system design such as driver number and spacing, room reflectivity, listener position, etc.
Fully agree. The Chesky recordings (he was listening to) are produced especially to return a wide soundstage. I doubt the music would ever really sound like that, in real life. But since we're in the digital / headphone world, it's already a different beast. Personally, I like it here. I use the HD800 headphones which are known to have a wide (unreal?) stage, but, for some reason, I like hearing instruments coming from behind my head sometimes. That always wakes up my brain. :)

My earliest recollection of really liking music was in maybe 1967 or so (I was 10, my brother was 8). We had both been gifted AM radios with ear buds. There were two competing AM radio stations coming out of Chicago: WLS and WCFL. We would switch stations to keep the "best" music in our heads - always signaling to each other when a station change was required. Fun stuff.

Old memories, I also listen to AM radio at night, put it under the pillow to get a warmer sound, (also) it will not leak out sound which can alert my mother to scold me.
