LEDs:  surely there must be an affordable option such as tinted window over the bulb, painted bulb, off center bulb, lightdims stickers put on the inside of a window over the bulb, or, as Jason is going to look into, custom bulb bought in bulk.

I use these...

The silver match the aluminum Schiit cases and really reduce the amount of light coming from the LED's.

Well... they're close enough.  (I bought some, yes.)   The LED in my magni isn't flush, though, so no good there.

I just learned to live with it.

My Lyr's weren't flush either so no go there.  But they did great on everything else 2 Wyrd's, Bimby and Jotunheim.  They literally lit the room when they were all on but with the Light Dim's it is much better now...

Nor has there been an (affordable) modular amp/DAC amp/whatever. That's why it's revolutionary. I'm sticking to that.

Somewhere, a single tear falls down Tyll Hertsen's cheek. The HeadRoom Desktop Amp/DAC was precisely that. $599 for the base amp, and you could add in DAC modules for $249-$399 (multiple options), and even upgrade the amp module itself.

Now I want to be clear here that the Jotunheim is an amazing value compared to that old HeadRoom product -- discrete balanced amplifier vs. an op-amp design for less money, balanced DAC for 1/3-1/4 of the cost of the DAC modules in the HeadRoom -- but it was definitely a (relatively affordable) modular amp/DAC.

... although I guess not an "amp/whatever," which is maybe where you're putting the distinction?

He was ahead of his time! That review is from 2006, and we didn't even get into the market until 2010.

I was unaware of that product, sorry.

But yes, "amp/whatever" and "affordable" are important distinctions, at least in my mind. Again, I may be crazy.

The Krell Phantom III preamp had a headphone outlet or DAC module option.  And was somewhat affordable after closed stock discount pricing.

A $5,500 preamp is affordable?

Not flush as in protruding out from the casing?

Yes, slightly.  Enough to keep the Light Dim from being flush with the case.

You should be able to press it flush.

Hence the caveat.  I think I saw it at $3200 before finally disappearing.  More of an indictment of the dealer distribution pricing model than anything else. With some branding premium thrown in.  Excellent SQ in competition with a couple of high end tube amps, for what it's worth.
