Somewhere, a single tear falls down Tyll Hertsen's cheek. The
HeadRoom Desktop Amp/DAC was precisely that. $599 for the base amp, and you could add in DAC modules for $249-$399 (multiple options), and even upgrade the amp module itself.
Now I want to be clear here that the Jotunheim is
an amazing value compared to that old HeadRoom product -- discrete balanced amplifier vs. an op-amp design for less money, balanced DAC for 1/3-1/4 of the cost of the DAC modules in the HeadRoom -- but it was definitely a (relatively affordable) modular amp/DAC.
... although I guess not an "amp/whatever," which is maybe where you're putting the distinction?
