I can't go to sleep tonight this morning without staring that, after a full day of listening to the speakers-in-my-face office system (Tidal app on PC -> USB -> OG Jotunheim TrueMultibit -> 2x Aegir -> KEF LS50s just out of arm's reach from my desk chair), I am honestly wondering why I even bother with the "big" system downstairs; the office system is that freaking good. Even at low volume levels, the presentation is wide, deep, clear and stunningly dynamic (with the right recording, of course).
A lot of grinning here today - I got a bunch of work done, and it was generally effortless because music was everywhere. This system hasn't seen the use I expected to date, so it took a bit longer to cohere than I expected. But after about 150 hours of run-time... whoa. The music just hangs in the air, and surrounds my work area like a giant set of headphones. When I have to mute the music for MS Teams calls, I feel sad.
I am super interested in outcome of the face-off at the Schiitr meet Thursday. But I can say that if you're considering an Aegir or two, and you haven't pulled the trigger yet... you're wasting valuable time. Aegir is an amazing amplifier, IMHO delivering a ton of tube goodness without the glow. YMMV, but Schiit will always take them back for a slight restocking fee. /ds
One of my favourites beers, Innis & Gunn, are "beers matured in rum casks, Scotch whisky casks, Irish whiskey casks and more. Our unique, breakthrough beer in barrel process ensures consistent cask-matured beer with a rich depth of flavour." - But I've never known of whiskey finished in beer casks. Who knew.
.
Yes Innis & Gunn beers do have a unique taste and finish that is both delicious and intriguing - I do wonder what beer finished in a bourbon cask would be like ?
Welp, you were right @bcowen . A little more break-in time on the DL-103 and the bass is back! Also just like you said, more airiness. I probably only have like 20 hrs on this cart, and that's not a bad run-in time for how it's sounding now.
This is probably the most played record in my collection. If it doesn't sound right, I know something's up. It now sounds considerably better than it did with my grado gold/8mz, or any grado I've ever run for that matter. Bass is warmer, more hefty, solid. I get lost in the reverb more. More slam.
My memory of the albums from the 80s was that they were cheaply made, usually warped, and had lots of surface noise. Masters weren't great either, to the point where I spent twice as much to get the japanese pressings of my favorite bands.
In the 1970's I acquired a Pioneer PL12D record player. Well, it was better than a BIC! I then got a Sony Discman and a few CDs. My first was, Holy Mother! there is no surface like a needle plowing through a vinyl groove! I bought some CDs, but at the time you could buy most records for a street price of $7.50 or under. CDs were about double. A few years later I bought a Sysemdek IIX record player, with a Linn arm and Linn Basic Cartridge.
The second I put the needle set up I got a really. It was very to the the low surface noise of the CD. I was going to save a lot of money.
A few years later I got a Well Tempered Turntable... a mid 1990's Rotel CD player, a Rega Planet II CD player. My take is a decent turntable with a needle in good shape -- and a record that has not been used as a Frisbee has a good chance of very low record noise. A good pressing helps; I love Mobile Fidelity and European and Japanese pressings. Japan was more likely to use virgin vinyl, yes? There are a lot of crappy record and CDs. Unfortunately with all the variables the "best" sample of a music release could be either the CD or LP version, and which version / release of the CD or lp?
You and I purchased some of the last units before before Schiit changed over to selling Yggy+ exclusively.
Schiit is honest about their inventory.
We took advantage of the transition from Yggy to Yggy+ and saved a few dollars.
Enjoy your purchase. I'll enjoy mine.
I’m thrilled to have one coming to me, and candidly I’m not sure I would have ever pulled the trigger on one at $2700 - I am that price sensitive.
Also it won’t bother me if a couple more pop up there in the next week or two, these are tremendous opportunities for the savvy buyer.
