Schiit Happened: The Story of the World's Most Improbable Start-Up

And it is not another USB-SPDIF converter, nor another class D amp, nor another room correction system, nor another digital preamp.

We're calling this development The Manhattan Project. As in, never been done before. Components like The Gadget simply have never existed. It is not another anything. As Mike said, this is an undertaking of a magnitude similar to creating the first standalone audio DAC.

Damn, you guys have really perfected your teasing abilities ;)

My guess would be a binaural dsp and will be named Schiit Eir,95% the music are mastered by speakers (5% are EDM producers with M50 lol), so one digital processor will make an improvement in the imaging/sound-stage on headphones. I know crossfeed "make" this, but almost all are really bad.

Well, I hope the Gadget fits the Schiit standard of something with high value and wide appeal to audio lovers in the real world. What "new" digital product would comply has me stumped.

But I look forward eagerly to its arrival.

Or, breath long enough that your HF hearing starts to degrade, possibly acquiring a degree of tinnitus along the way. That makes it easier. Will that new Omega Ultima DAC sound better? Quite possibly, but you couldn't hear the difference ;-)

...It is a digital-to-digital converter. In goes whatever audio algorithm - out comes sausage that is optimized for Mega-Combo-Burrito filter dac ;)
Can i get a discount for Yggy because of my correct answer? ;)

So, when Mike mentioned it, I felt the need to disambiguate (look it up) and reassure everyone that this wasn't gonna be some crazy DAC at 3x the Yggdrasil's price, or a better DAC than Yggdrasil at 1/8 the price, or anything like that. The DAC line is solid. The digital filter is not in flux. Everything is as it should be in DAC-land. Cool?

Aw c'mon Jason, obfuscate.  You know you want to...  ;)  And re. DACland, this comes under the heading of "Why monkey with success?".

So, if I can speculate, "something new never done before" has to be an extension of the digital signal chain in either direction, e.g. digital transducer, or a foray out into the digital audio periphery, a whole 'nother product that either sells itself, or requires educating the consumer base as to the need or desirability, like selling iceboxes to eskimos.

So, since it's a digital component and Mr Moffat said that he's tweaking the algorithms in the Gadget, it seems to be some kind of DSP. Magical device that interpolates data lost in MP3 compression that makes 320kbps sound like 24/192 .wav?

Anyone know the operating frequencies of the 2 clocks on the Yggdrasil ?    Are these femto specs clocks ?

There are a couple of Yggdrasil threads here at Head-Fi.  Owners would be more likely to know the answer.

Is there a way to convert 96khz files to 44.1khz without approximations?

The mega-combo-burrito filter will only interpolate or decimate by 2x integers, i.e. 2x 4x 8x 16x, etc. or 1/2x, 1/4x, 1/8x, 1/16x etc.  Your example would require 1/2.7687074829932, a real number.

Funny you should ask -- I am taking a long look as we speak of alternative filter algorithms for "The Manhattan Project".  This is a completely new and unprecedented audio component.  We already have a running prototype of "The Gadget" (absolutely hair-raising) but have yet much software to try.  It can be frustrating, as this device has NO precedents for audio.  But then again, neither did the first pre-Theta stuff 30+ years ago.

Okay, then to be consistent, that filter should be called the "big-enchilada".

do we win something if we guess right?
from the Manhattan project... something to make an element highly unstable up to the point where it explodes violently and kills people? something that should have never been made? something that people will not use but all try to get to impress the neighbors and get respect? am I cold(war)?
I have to admit it's hard seeing any positive connotations from such a reference. I preferred the end of the world when it had a more mythological touch like ragnarok.

shiit! trying to sell you the end of the world with a great theme song!  (apocalypse now?) ^_^

Maybe it's an Oscillation Overthruster, adapted to music.  Experience sound in the eighth dimension!

Don't you people realize what's going on?

By announcing they're working on a revolutionary project that's never been done before, they challenged everyone's pride to guess what that magic product might be and, at the same time, are stealing all the great product ideas from us, guessers.

This is the Manhattan Project: a social experiment aiming at stealing ideas from innocent - and unaware - geniuses.
